    Hello Everyone …

We recently upgraded from Avid Media Composer 3.1 on Windows XP to AMC 5 on Windows 7.

    Here’s my issue:

Prior to the upgrade, we created a P2 archive system by burning our p2 cards onto 50 gb BluRay discs. We did this, simply, by dragging the CONTENTS folder and the Last Clip file onto the BluRay disc, and burning.

Prior to the upgrade, this worked fine. The BluRay discs were virtual P2 cards.

But since the upgrade to MC5 here’s what happens:

We import “clips to bin” and the clips appear. But when you look at them in “frame” view, you can see that each of the clips are nothing but digital garbage. And, naturally, we can’t import them.

We checked several other discs — all of which worked fine before the upgrade. Now they all have the same issue.

Here’s what’s strange: we also have Quicktime files backed up onto BluRay discs, and they still import just fine.

Avid Tech Support seems to think that the Avid upgrade “doesn’t like” that the CONTENTS folder and “last clip” file are not in a separate folder. In other words BluRay disc > Random Folder > CONTENTS folder and “last clip” file. But I don’t see how this can be right, especially since it worked before. The Avid tech is supposedly checking on this. And the thought of re-burning all those discs makes me crazy!!!

Oh, by the way, we have no trouble importing actual P2 cards, as well as P2 cards backed up onto exterior hard drives. (Which I don’t trust in the long term.)

Does anyone have any feedback here? Thank you kindly. Our entire operation is shut down until this issue is resolved.

Have you tried using the Panasonic P2 Manager software? It will read a “virtual card.” If this works, then you could export from the Blu-Ray to an attached hard drive or RAID and work from there.

Yes, I’ve found that that does work. Thank you Kevin. It’s just such a pain to have to take the extra step of transferring from the BluRay disc to an attached hard drive. The transfer takes about 20 minutes. And it kind of makes me cranky because it all worked fine before we upgraded to MC5/Win7!!

Thank you so much for your reply.

I am staying at MC4 until the dust settles.

    Hi Lori

We also backup to 50 gig Bluray disks here and have no issues…in fact I find that if you maintain the P2 file structure it works well importing into the Avid. I was able to copy 1 hour and 45 mins of footage in about 28 mins into my Avid…(Standard Def). Maybe when you copied over to the bluray the files got corrupted?

Hi Robert. Thanks for responding. All is well. We recently figured out the problem. Guess what? In the course of updating, someone had switched the cables!

    Thanks again!
