I have created a series of lower third text titles for an HD project. I am doing several language versions of an original sequence edited as HD with a quality of DNxHD185.

I inadvertantly saved the new titles as DNxHD120. Will this cause me any export problems or any noticable image quality issues?

I hate to have to re-create these titles… I thought there also might be a way to change the parameters. I seem to remember somewhere highlighting a series of clips/titles and changing them through some tool) of titles and created media … yet I haven’t found this in my (still limited) search in the instruction manuals.

Also… I have to change all the sizes of the graphics I created (I have a logo on the side of a white oblong box background for these lower third titles).

Is there some way of using a “copy and paste” setting to copy the attributes only (size and placement) without copying the actual material? I have done this with FCP, but don’t readily see a way of doing this in MC 4… I don’t have MC 5 just yet. I assume otherwise Ihave to go into each title or key setting and change the attributes manually.

    Thanks in advance,
    David C. Lewis

    Hi David,

to change your the the codec from DNXHD 120 to 185 you simply mark all titles in your timeline with an in and out point, then activate the videolayer your titles are on. Now you can choose under Clip menu (in the middle between Bin and Output menu) recreate title media. The following pop up window allows you the set the codec to DNXHD 185.
You won`t have any problems exporting your timeline with the DNxHD 120 titles though. About the loss of quality… Well just do a test with the same title in 185 and compare the result. It might be noticeable.
I`m not in front of an avid right now but in version 3.5 I hab problems with repositioning titles using the effect editor. They lost a lot of quality. I`m not sure how vs 4 is handling with that. I guess it has been fixed because I never had the problem with older versions of MC.
And I haven`t found a way so far to copy effect changes from one title to the next.

    Yours sincerely
    Hans

Hans- Thank you for your helpful reply.

I will try your suggestion… I’m sure it will work.

Too bad AVID hasn’t come up with a way to copy and paste EFX attributes like FCP (can’t speak about other systems, but they may have it as well). It can be a very handy and time-saving tool being able to transfer attributes ONLY from one effect to another.

I have successfully copied “resize” and the like, but when it comes to title or key sizes, so far it seems to be a slower process. If I use the same technique for title sizes it appears that I also will copy the title media information.

Again thanks and all the best,

    David

    For copying effects on titles.
From the effect editor, hold down the alt key (option on the Mac) and drag the effect icon into a bin.
The name of the effect in the bin should include the text: (without source).
Now apply this saved effect onto the other titles. This will change the effect parameters only and not the title itself.

Gary, thank you a great tip!

I assume this will work for keys and other EFX as well (trial and error should answer that question!). I will try this technique today. That should be a great help. I guess I should read the manual a bit more closely.

    All the best.

Yes, experitment with using the modifier keys when dragging the effect icon to a bin. Different behavior for different types of clips. For example, if you alt drag an effect on a regular clip it will include the source media. This can be a real time saver in certain situations.

You can also drop a saved effect onto a single parameter in the effect editor to only change that parameter. For example, if you wanted to change the color of a border on a 3D warp effect without changing the position, scale or any other parameter. You would drag and drop a saved effect onto the border controls in the effect editor. Experitment with this as well.
