I switched from FCP to AVID MC 5 and I am super frustrated .It seemed ok in the tutorial but now I am actually trying to begin editing something,I am having a devil of a time it is SO different.I am sooo used to FCP and this is just awful. I thought that they were similar. I am really unhappy with it. How long does it take to learn?I am miserable! It feels as if I will never get anything done . My brain is just used to FCP and I was sooo comfortable with it.
Has anyone else had this experience and if so, how long did it take you to be comfortable with the change ? I know everyone is diffrent.. : (

    Well, yes, it sucks.
I switched to Avid after Premiere and M100.
It took me a year of cursing (and luckily back than i had a rock solid ADB keyboard that could sustain my beatings) before i took an Avid 101 course.
    That was a life saver.

Forget what you know, start over, learn to work the way Avid wants you to work, or you’ll get frustrated.

Personally, i love Avid for a number of reasons, but there are still a lot of things that are just plain stupid.

There is no doubt that Avid is difficult to learn…especially coming from another NLE. It is better if you come in fresh, without your mind clouded by how other NLE’s work. But it took me a while as an assistant…talking 4 years…until I felt VERY comfortable with Avid MC. I was OK by year 2, but I was learning more and more as time goes on, and I am still learning.

But yeah, if you come from FCP, Avid can be a bear. But once you figure out how to use TRIM modes and work more with the keyboard and less with the mouse…you can fly. But I still prefer FCP…even though I know both. I am much faster, and FCP is more intuitive for me. Avid is based on FILM…handling film. I like how FCP does things better.

I moved from Discreet Edit* to Media Composer 4 years ago. Biggest difficulty was adjusting to Avid’s trim functions. Edit* wasn’t as capable as MC, but the learning curve was quite shallow and trims were very easy.

Biggest danger I’ve found is using the “undo” function without realizing when you’re making a change way at the other end of the sequence. That has resulted in some surprises later in the day or week or month or when the client calls and asks what’s happening.

And oh yes, I swing between MC and Vegas. The two programs are so dissimilar that there is no confusion at all.
