Final Cut’s text tool seems way better?
Hello! I have a quick question as I’m transitioning over from Final Cut 7 to Media Composer 5 and loving it so far.
But the Final Cut title tool, although very simplistic in its ability to create complex titles, seems much easier to work with since it doesn’t get saved as a video file.
For example, something that I do a lot in Final Cut is create text that gets larger. I use keyframes and scale up the text. When I try to do this in MC, because the text is a saved video file, it pixelates as it zooms in.
There has to be a way to fix this. I haven’t tried using Marquee yet. Does this allow you to zoom text in without it getting pixelated? Or do pros typically just use high res photos for titles in MC?

IMHO, although I LOVE Avid, the title tool is weak and to do what you want to do needs to be done in Marquee – it is cumbersome, but like anything, once you do it, learn it and use it frequently enough then it will do the job. I believe it is one of the weakest parts of Avid. For many titles, I do not use Marquee, therefore, I do not learn it. If you are already familiar with AE, then this is the next best option.

I’ll have to experiment with Marquee, I guess. So do those titles not pixelate as they are blown up (like in Final Cut?) or do you create the movement within Marquee?

You create the movement within marquee and it renders it as a file – any change needed must be done again in Marquee and re-rendered.

Okay, that sounds good.
What do pros typically use when they want to do movement with text on Avid? Marquee? High resolution Photoshop images? Or is there a standard plug-in that everyone uses? On Final Cut, I know that Boris Title 3D tool is very popular.

Wish i could help you – I don’t work commercially so I don’t consider my self a “pro” – I guess it depends on experience and budget. A real project with a real budget would probably include a line item for graphics artist which could deliver files. As an Avid editor, you can use AE, Plug-in(s) like Boris, Marquee – I would say each editor has his/her own preferences. No rules, just find something you like that works for you and your workflow … whatever gets the job done. Others on here (the pros) can offer you other alternatives or advice.

Ha! When I said “pros” I just meant anyone that knows what they’re doing, because I certainly don’t. Thanks so much for the advice. I’ll mess around with Marquee and see what I can do.

You can do it all in Marquee. It is rather an opaque tool and many people seem to give up at the first hurdle. I have made many complex text animations for broadcast with Marquee. Once you “save to bin” your title is a video file so further manipulations will degrade your title. If you want to work this way, save your title to bin as large as possible and then shrink it and re-expand it in your timeline. There is a time-line in Marquee and you can have as many layers as you want, fades, moves, grows etc. are all possible. Thanks so much Matt! This is basically what I wanted to know, that it is all possible in Marquee. A friend of mine just worked with Christian Wagner, who’s the editor for the film Man on Fire. He said that he does a lot of his own titling work in Avid, which is impressive.

You’ll have to use AE to compete with what FCP can do, graphic-wise. Avid hasn’t upgraded their DVE since 1995 when the 3D DVE was released in MC version 5
…the first MC vbersion 5.
