24 fps or 23.98 fps
Whenever I ask someone working on a film 24fps project with PAL rushes (not NTSC 29.97, but PAL 25) to export a QT movie ‘same as source’ to send me, I get a Quicktime movie with the Avid 14:1, or Avid DV or whatever codec they’re using. That’s fine. But the movie comes as 23.98 fps. Not 24 fps.
Is there some way of exporting a true 24fps movie in Avid MC, any version.

I have never seen that. All same-as-source QT exports I have ever done from MC 24p projects were 24.00fps, and so were any DV-PAL exports I did from those projects.
Sometimes the QT player’s playback speed would vary a bit around the 24 number when playing back on the desktop, but in principle, these QT’s were 24.00fps, and played back in perfect sync in audio post.

I second what Job says. But then again, QuickTime can be a variable in how it declares its frame rates as well. One thing to look at is the Film/24p settings and make the edit rate 24 rather than 25 and see if that affects the rate of the QT export. I don’t think it does, but worth a look.

One more important thing, when doing custom exports, MC (or actually the QT engine) allows you to set the framerate of the export.

Thanks for the inputs. I did a test export in an MC system and like you guys said, it came out as 24 fps.
But I have received 23.98 fps movies from clients in the past. I need to dig deeper and figure if they were doing a ‘same as source’ or custom. And maybe the version and project settings too.———————————–
