AVID Media Composer 5 EDL to FCP?
Posted by James Culbertson on October 26, 2010 at 9:16 pmI’ve been handed a hard drive with a project that I thought was edited in FCP but was done in AVID Media Composer 5 instead.
I need to get this little 6 minute piece (just stills and voiceover) over to FCP via EDL.
Can MC5 open an AVP file and spit out an EDL without all the media or do I need to bring the whole drive?
Thanks,
James

AVP file?
An EDL won’t cut it. You need to export an AAF, and then use Automatic Duck Pro Import to import that AAF into FCP…with media. Not doable without Automatic Duck.

Avid Video Project I believe. I ask because I can export an EDL from a standalone FCP project (offline media) and then re-import the EDL into FCP and reconnect to media elsewhere. So, I wondered if AVID could do this as well.

I assumed that AVID could output Sony or CMX EDLs. This is a really basic tweak and finish project and the budget does not warrant purchasing Pro Import FCP (much less MC5). I haven’t received any other AVID based projects since 2003 and don’t anticipate any requests anytime soon. (Not that I wouldn’t mind checking out the new things in MC5.)
Thanks, James

From Avid to Avid…yes. But the issue is that the media types used by FCP and Avid MC are different. MXF vs QuickTime. So yes, you could send an EDL, and import that into FCP. But relinking to the MEDIA…that won’t work as FCP doesn’t work with MXF files. You need to make them QT files. And Automatic Duck does that…sorta. it makes a lot of PROXY QT files that reference the original media…so that FCP can see the footage.

It can.

Then download the 30 day trial…free…and use that to tweak and finish. Finish it in the same app as you were handed.

“Next time make sure what they are sending you. I have had this happen a few times too…luckily I have MC and FCP on the same machine. Get the demo and finish in MC5….that way you can check out the app too.
