  • MC 5 with MXO2 mini + FCP Kona?

Posted by Uli Kunkel on September 9, 2010 at 10:33 pm

I’m considering buying the MXO2 mini and MC 5 to add to my Final Cut edit system with an AJA Kona LHe. I would then have a system that could digitize into FCP with a ProRes codec then edit in Media Composer.

I called Matrox to ask if there were any conflicts between the MXO2 mini and the Kona, and they said that, to their knowledge, no.

Anyone out there done this or considered doing it? If so, any problems?

[Uli Kunkel] “I would then have a system that could digitize into FCP with a ProRes codec then edit in Media Composer. “

Make sure that you then transcode that to DNxHD. Otherwise you can’t export an OMF/AAF for audio.

Are you saying that if you use “Link to AMA files” to edit with ProRes you won’t be able to export an OMF for sound using the audio from those ProRes files?

Yup…that’s what I’m saying. You cannot export an AAF from non-Avid codec sources. That was the FIRST thing I tested when I got my hands on Avid MC5.

I did that because I wanted to test capturing ProRes in FCP, edit in Avid MC5, export an AAF to Automatic Duck for import back to FCP so I could send to Color. Won’t work.

What the heck? What’s the point of using Link to AMA workflow then? I suppose if you never have to post sound elsewhere, that’s fine.

Good grief. What if it’s dual system sound?

[Uli Kunkel] “What’s the point of using Link to AMA workflow then?”

For those people who want to work natively. Got me. One tip that people say to do is to use AMA to link to native or ProRes, then edit, then consolidate/transcode your final sequence, THEN you can export an AAF. I haven’t done that…I use AMA to access the footage, and then transcode to an Avid format.

[Uli Kunkel] “Good grief. What if it’s dual system sound?”

Dual system sound? That should work fine. As long as there is NO native format footage in the timeline.

Well, if you sync your clips linked through AMA to your dual system sound, you’ll have non-native audio in the timeline synced with native video. As long as I don’t cut any of the native sound into the timeline, it should still export OMF, yes?

This is where you do a small test and see. I don’t have second system audio to test with. ALWAYS test workflows out before you do them.
