  Workflow HDCAM to QT & DVD delivery

  Hello there,
  I’d appreciate it if anyone can point out any glaring holes in the following workflow…

  I’m about to start a project shot on HDCAM but destined for
  a few different non-broadcast outputs, primarily:

  1. SD DVD (Pal)
  2. Quicktimes for playing from hard disks for some on site installation videos.

  I would usually use FCP for a project like this, but on this occasion I have to use MC4 (on an intel 2x 2.66 dualcore with the media on a FW800 drive.)

  My plan is to get the rushes captured DNxHD 145 and without an online use compressor or similar to make the SD DVDs and quicktimes.

  There’s a possibility we might be asked to supply HD versions later on..

  Any thoughts?

  Process is pretty straightforward. Once edit is complete, render your timeline and export a QT reference for use with Compressor or encoding application of your choice. Just remember that digital video for broadcast assumes 16-235 RGB for black and white levels and compressor expects 0-255. If you export out as REC709, Compressor will lift the blacks since it assumes (makes an ass of u and me) that it is 0-255.

  If you export out as RGB, Media Composer will create full range 0-255 as part of the QT ref process so that if makes up for the inability to address that in Compressor.

  Thanks for the reassurance Michael,

  Yes the RGB/ 709 issue – remember that confusing the hell out of me when i first started using FCP
  (I still don’t understand it fully, i remember doing some tests once – DVDs looked the same weather i started with a 709 export or an RGB export…)

  I was more worried about the DNxHD codecs causing me any issues when it comes to delivery – i’m used to more of an offline/online process when using avid – but i guess i don’t see why it would – even if i have to err… deliver something like h.264 quicktimes..

  DNxHD145 will serve you just fine for those deliverables as well as a potential broadcast down the road.
