1080/24p( RED) project sound import at 24 or 25?
Posted by Zoe Westley on August 31, 2010 at 12:37 pmHi everyone
Can someone clarify something for me. i am working in a 1080/24p project
footage shot on red cam at 24
sound recorded at 24 frame rate, sample rate 48k.
when importing the sound into the avid, it asks if i want to import at 24 or 25? I am presuming that because this is an HD project it should be 24? our tech support guy says it should be 25.
I imported a test at 25 at it seems to sync up okay
would be very grateful if someone could give me some advice.
THANK YOU

August 31, 2010 at 1:16 pmIf all source elements were recorded at 24fps, then you should be in a 24p project. Since I see 25fps being mentioned, I assume we are talking 24.000 and not 23.76. Create a 1080p/24 and import sources. The START timecode column will track all picture and sources. If a common timecode was used, then AutoSync will create new subclips that are both V+A. EDL’s generated will reference each source individually if needed.
When importing audio, the Media Composer sees the 48kHz rate and asks what the timecode rate is – based on the user entry, the timecode is calculated as a “samples from midnight” offset. If you select 24 you will get one value, and if you select 25 you will get another (4.1% difference). This is the metadata being changes while the sample rate stays the same so change in duration or pitch.

August 31, 2010 at 1:30 pmHi Michael
thank you for your reply.
Yes it is a 1080/24p project, both sound and picture have been recorded at 24fps, so i should be importing the sound at 24fps as well right?
I have spoken to the Sound Mixers and they will be mixing to 24fps QuickTimes using OMF’s, our tech supports concern was that if we end up mixing to tape, then they believe that if the sound was imported into the avid at 24 then we could have problems at the mix stage.

August 31, 2010 at 1:47 pmCertainly keeping everything at 24fps keeps everyone at the same frame rate and 1:1 relationship to the sources without speed-up. If there is concern that the mix stage can’t work at 24fps, then I would make sure and speak to them beforehand – but in this day and age of HD video, that should no longer be a issue. It was an issue in the mid to late 90’s before a true 24p video standard and it was only SD and film. Digital Cinema spec is 24.000fps, so I am pretty sure they can make it work…

August 31, 2010 at 7:09 pmGreat thank you that all makes perfect sense. 24 it is.
One last question, would you recommend importing the sound as PCM (MXF) or Wave or AIFF
We would deliver AIFF or OMFI files to the sound department later on down the line
Many thanks for all your help

August 31, 2010 at 8:39 pmI’m a WAV guy – especially if the sources were already recorded as WAV…
