Dubbing down from HDCam 23.98 to DV, then onlining back in Avid question
So I shot a short film on 16mm. The telecine color corrected master is on a 23.98p HDCAM tape. I dubbed the HDCAM tape down to DV, making sure my timecode matched (obviously I was creating 30i from 24, but you know what I mean by matched). Then when making my Avid Project an engineer at the filmschool I attend said to make my project at 23.97 so I can easily online later. I was unsure if the DV would capture into that project, but I tried it and I did. So I’m editing that “offline” now with the DV footage. My computer and drives cannot handle working with the HDCAM files, which is why I had to dub down in the first place in case that wasn’t clear. My question is, how exactly do I go about onlining to the HDCAM in the Avid?
I just tried doing this with my HDCAM deck all properly hooked up and whatnot. First I tried decomposing the sequence and batch capturing the clips that came up. Second I tried just old-school renaming the folders that the media files were in to offline them and then to batch capture the sequence. Both times I got an error something to the gist of “Could not capture because your tape is at 23.97, but this is not a 23.97 clip”. Which is correct its a 30i clip since I captured it from a dubbed down mini dv tape. But the chief engineer at the time insisted that if I made a 23.97 project, which i did, it would take in my 30i dub down, which it did, and then I would be able to online no problem. He wasn’t there today so I couldn’t ask him. Any tips? What do I have to do to get this to work?

You mentioned HD files but first said your footage was on HDcam tape.
Just wondering why you didn’t offline from those very tapes.

The workflow that I was told to do at my school was to dub from HDCAM to mini DV then work with the mini DV capturing, and online back to the HDCam later, so that’s what I did. I’m not even sure how I would do what you’re suggesting, and really right now, I’m looking for a solution that won’t force me to re-capture, log and sync everything.

Open the sequence in a 1080p/23.976 project
Right click/modify
Change sequence to 1080
batch capture.It will recalculate all clips to be true 24fps and do the timecode conversion based on the original pulldown relationship of 23.976 to 29.97.

I actually just did this and got it to work perfectly. I thought I was doing this before, but my sequence wasn’t updated to 1080p 23.97 (it was just at 23.97) even though my project was in 1080p 23.97. I just wasn’t individually modifying those settings like I should have been. Thanks everyone.
