AAF Errors from MC 3.5.1
Posted by Alex Brueckner on April 13, 2010 at 6:32 pmHi, I’m very sorry if this has been posted before, but I have been scouring the internet for hours now trying to find a solution to this problem.
I exported an .aaf file for sound work to be done, but the file was giving him errors. The closest he got was being able to open it in Pro Tools (although he wants to use Logic), but have every item show up as a new track and queued to the start of the timeline. I have tried importing it into both Premiere and Vegas but it just crashes both programs. This is an HD project, so I can’t do an OMF file instead.
I have done an aaf with this exact installation of MC 3.5.1 before for another project (only about a month ago) and it worked perfectly.
I also transcoded all the audio so that it has a consistent sample rate throughout, and got rid of all my fades and effects on the audio tracks.
I’m really stuck here, and I can’t seem to find any other suggestions. If anyone can help it would be greatly appreciated.

April 13, 2010 at 7:36 pmHi Alex,
I don`t think I can be much of a help, but I experience Audio Export problems every now and then. First of all, you can export an OMF2.0 even if you editing in HD. Simply use the transcode option in your export settings. Use OMF2.0 and then check the options for transcode to .omf wave end e.g. 24 bit. this works quite well in my workflow. I sometimes have some problems using AAF or OMF exports when the corresponding ProTools version is too new for the used Avid version. No experience using Logic though. The painful way would be to trim your audio clips like doing a tape playout and then export simple wave files for each audio track in your timeline.Yours sincerely

April 13, 2010 at 8:41 pmThanks for the tip, but could you possibly be a bit more specific? I’m relatively new to Avid.

April 13, 2010 at 10:05 pmCan you give more info about the project?
Frame rate? Resolution? Tape based or XDCAM or P2, etc.? Are you using multicam?
BTW…you can just temporarily change the project setting to SD to export as OMF instead of AAF, if you want to try that.

April 13, 2010 at 10:19 pmCould you tell me how to change to SD and export as an OMF instead? I looked through all the menus and couldn’t find anything that seemed to fit that.
The project is in 1080p and at 23.976 fps. It was shot on a Cannon 7D and an HMC150, and brought into Avid as DNxHD. It’s being stored as MXF, I believe.

April 14, 2010 at 5:56 amHi Alex,
on the top of your project window you have different tabs. One is labeled Format. Under this tab you can change your Project settings temporarily. Don`t worry you can change them back and forth as often as you want. When you have changed you project to a SD NTSC project you can switch your media creation setting from mxf to omf. Once you have done that, you can perform an OMF export. In your export settings you then can check the three boxes on the lower right of your options window. There you can tell your avid to transcode your mxf files to omf during export. You can also change the sample rate and bit depth to your liking.
Hope this helps.Hans

April 14, 2010 at 7:53 pmHans you are my hero! I just heard back from my director and the omf was able to open in Pro Tools just fine.
I had to troubleshoot a small problem on their end, though, which leads me to believe that there may have been no problem with the AAF file in the first place, and that they just didn’t know what the hell they were doing.

There are sometimes problems with different Avid versions and ProTools. Sometimes omf or aaf exports don`t open in ProTools if the version is much younger than the avid version.Hans

April 24, 2010 at 8:07 pmFollow-up problem:
After getting them an omf, it looked like everything was going to work fine. They only just started getting to work on it in Pro Tools today, and I got a call. Basically, the omf got imported fine, but there’s an issue with the handles. The handles are there, but they contain no audio. I am being told that it could be an issue with Avid’s subclips – that they can export with handles like this, but no information. The whole edit was done with subclips like this because I used the AutoSync feature to sync all the sound in the first place. Does anyone know anything about this issue? I haven’t had much luck Googling for it.

April 26, 2010 at 10:21 amHi Alex,
sorry to hear you`re still having trouble with your sound export. I don`t know if there`s a problem wit hsub clips in general. In my experience sub clips are no problem. If not then the whole Avid ProTools workflow would be pretty much useless because subclipping is a common choice for preparing your material. In the first place i would try to reimport your OMF Sequence you sent to the sound dept.(check that your avid system doesen`t see the original media on your drives) and take a look at the handles. If they are with sound then avid did export the material. If not you can then try to do another short export of your original sequence and check that one. I don`t think there`s a general problem with subclips but that doesn`t mean there isn`t one. Check the versions of your avid/ProTools systems. As posted earlier older Avid versions tend to put out funky results with new ProTools systems.

April 26, 2010 at 3:28 pmThanks again for replying, Hans. The problem has now been resolved, though. I still don’t know what the problem was, but I fixed it by exporting an omf with the “consolidate” option instead of the “copy all” option. When I did it was way, the handles were intact.
Frankly, I’m still suspicious that they are just clueless on the other end. The first problem I reported about here was never really a problem at all – they just didn’t know what they were doing.
