Cannot install Avid: hangs on:’Installing Digidesign Drivers’
Hi there,
I am currently attempting a clean install of my Avid Xpress pro (5.7) software (which I will be upgrading to Media Composer after install), onto my HPXW8400 running WinXP Pro SP@ (32 bit).
The installation process freezes* when it gets to ‘Installing Digidesign drivers, this will take a few minutes’.
*(timed at over 30 minutes before I rebooted the pc) .
I have tried 3 fresh installs and each time the installation freezes when I get to ‘Installing Digidesign drivers’.
Please, does anyone know how to solve this problem?

My system specs: HP XW8400 workstation. OS: Windows XP Professional (32 bit) Service Pack 2.
System drive: 250GB SATA HDD. Internal Storage drive: 500GB SATA HDD. CPU:Dual Core Intel Xeon 5150@2.66GHz. 3GB Ram. Graphics card: Nvidia Quadro FX 1500. Avid RS232/433 Deck control and firewire 6 pin cables. ADS 64 bit Pyro firewire card. Atto UL4D SCSI card. -

You probably already have a digidesign driver installed on the machine.
Try uninstalling it via add/remove programs then installing again.

Thanks for the reply Matthew,
I am installing the Avid software as a clean install – I also did a clean install of the Windows XP PRO OS prior to the Avid install – consequently there has been no Avid or Digidesign software installed on the machine – so there is no possibility of any legacy Digidesign drivers remaining on the system to intefere with a fresh install of the Avid software.
I still can’t work out a way around this – I would be grateful for any other ideas!.

Have you installed any other devices or drivers?
Do you have any hardware attached to the machine?

Hi Matthew,
The only drivers I have installed prior to the Avid installation are the ones required by the Nvidia Quadro FX1500 graphics card.
There is no hardware attached (e.g. digidesign pro-tools mbox, external video/audio input output hardware etc) that might interfere with the installation.
I have also carried out the routine XP optimizations stipulated in the Avid optimization for XP pdf document.
The install will still not proceed past the installation of the digidesign drivers.

Hi Matthew,
your advice pushed me in hopefully the right direction:
there are two existing audio drivers installed on the machine which may be producing a conflict with the Digidesign drivers? – these are:
Realtex High Definition Audio Driver
High Definiton Audi Driver Package KB8811I’ll remove these and then see if the installation goes ahead.

The problem was Windows Internet Explorer 8 – I removed it and the Avid software installed ok.

Ah, thanks for the update. There’s an array of issues with the IE 8 and Avid.
I would have never guessed it here though.

Yep – I did loads of Avid forum searches on this issue and although the problem with the Digidesign drivers came up a lot no one connected the problem with IE8 – until today when someone brought it up at on the Media Composer forum at Avid and IE8 was mentioned.
