DNxHD 36 over Firewire from deck? And other stupid questions.
If the subject makes no sense – apologies, I have never worked with this resolution and I haven’t found much literature.
To put you guys in the frame:
Essentially, a job coming in wants to offline and subsequently online in DNxHD36. What I’ve received by way of digitising (in prep for the edit starting next week) is a bag comprising Digibetas, Beta SPs and some DVCPROHDs.
Our offline kit consists of Avid HP crates (most on xpress pro – some on MC3.5 for this job), normal Mojos (not SDI) and shared storage.
What I need to know is this:
1. Can I digitise those SD tapes into a DNxHD36 project?
2. Can I digitise into a DNxHD36 project over firewire?
3. Assuming the answer is yes to 1+2, does the SD footage remain at SD and the DVCPROHD go in at DVCPROHD, or do they both get converted to DNxHD res/files? I understand you can now have mixed res timelines? I presume that no sort of Uprez occurs (or at least not over Firewire?)
4. If the answer is no – how does one digitise into DNxHD – does it have to occur over SDI? In which case, is my best bet hiring an SDI Mojo? Can a normal mojo display the DNxHD images over composite?Sorry for the floundering, but my Avid life has been 98% SD/DV, I’ve never had any truck with any HD stuff let alone these new formats.

Hey Chris,
I have some partial answers. The DNxHD 36 is the smallest of the avid HD compressions for 24p projects. What you can do is create a 24p 1080 project and digitize the DVCproHD material, then before digitizing the SD change the format to 24p SD. You will bring in your SD material at 1:1 or 2:1 or whatever you choose then turn the project format back to 1080 24p. Now that you are back in HD you can transcode all the SD material to DNxHD 36 (or edit in a mixed resolution sequence till lock and transcode just the sequence). In disclaimer, all of this is kind of theoretical. I use this method a lot with 30i footage, but don’t know if you can digitize those SD tapes directly into a 24p project without some other conversions. Hope this helps in some way, I would definitely like to know how it all works out, hopefully one of the more knowledgeable guys has a more tested response. Best of luck. -
Do your SD tapes contain 24p material (i.e. with pulldown?), if so, capture in a NTSC 23.976 project. One captured, switch project to 1080p/23.976. SD will be scaled to fit 1080 via an uprez.
You cannot capture DnxHD36 via FireWire, this is only done via HD-SDI and while in a 1080p 23.976, 24, 0r 25 project type. You will need a Mojo DX at the very least.
Mojo DX is digital only, and while it has an SD downconvert function, the I/O is only HDMI or SDI. Analog component would be done via an external Digital to Analog converter from someone like AJA or Blackmagic.

As I thought, it requires us to hire pretty much a full complement of kit.
I’ve suggested that instead we digitise the SD at DV (as we normally would) and keep the DVCPROHD native over firewire.
I believe MC is happy having these formats mixed on the same timeline these days?
