I’ve been running some tests, but I first want to check with you fine folks and perhaps you have experience with digitizing HD 1080 23.98 footage into Avid Media Composer.

I am trying to digitize into offline. Using the SD out on the HDCAM-SR deck into my Avid. I am curious to know about any settings that I may not know about that would have to be adjusted in the Avid and/or on the HDCAM-SR deck to accomplish this task?

I have run into problems with looks like interlacing and blurred shots when cutting between shots.

Has anyone experienced this issue? Avid 2.8.3 Project: 23.976 NTSC (for offline) patching out of the HDCAM-SR SD-SDI-OUT into Avid SD-SDI-IN with embedded audio.

    Hi,

    edit play rate: 23.976
    Video Pulldown: Advanced, 2:3:3:2 pulldown

    it’s been set to : A

I digitized with these settings and it’s much better compared to the first test, with all the interlacing. However, it still doesn’t seem right, but I also don’t know if that is as good as it gets or if I am missing something else.

I do not beleive that deck outputs 2:3:3:2 advanced pulldown, so you should set it to 2:3:2:2 normal pulldown. Keep the “A” frame active as you do.

okay! So it looks much better now. Now I also read that you gotta make sure that you log and batch capture the clips to be digitized and to make sure that each logged clip starts on 0 or 5? Is that referring to 0 or 5 frames? Is that even true? If I start it on the A, will there be a need to adjust it to another (X,D etc) if the interlacing occurs again?

    Thanks for the suggestions!

    Hi Scott,

First if these are film transfers and you were given an ALE file use this to batch capture from and all your 3/2 cadence issues will be solved.

If you are capturing “on the fly” you should be able to set cadence once for each source tape.
Each tape that you capture from should have a continous cadence so you may never have to change untill you change source tapes. This may not hold true if the source tape is a clip reel or some other form of differing elements. Remember if you see mixed fields while capturing then your cadence has changed.

Standard film based project should have the Film A frame on the 0 and 5 frame of the NTSC sequence. Yes that is true.

    Hope this helps,
    Erik
