XDCam video playback stutters
Editing on Macbook Pro 2.2 Core 2 Duo, 4GBs ram on Avid MC 3.5. Using several external drives, but for this question, it’s a Lacie Rugged 500GB Firewire external (might be 5400 RPM…not sure).
My XDCam footage (35MPs) stutters horribly. I’ve tried USB 2.0, Firewire and my internal and it continues.
I’m updated with Avid, but can’t discern what the issue is….codec? drive? firewire?
argh!

Most likely the drive speed and connection to the system. Are you using FireWire 400 or 800? Is it really a 5400RPM disk?

thanks for the reply. I just installed a new 500GB internal Seagate 7200RPM drive, transfered the media (from a FW 800 drive) and it still stutters.
Video card? I have a GeForce 8600M GT on my MBP. I have 4gb ram, so it can’t be that.
I’m wondering if it’s the source media…hmmmm -
Make sure your raster is set to thin or full depending on the data rate of your acquisition to see if that adds any performance. Also try transcoding one of the source clips into a DNxHD format and see if that drops any frames.

I’m having the same exact issue. XDCAM footage (1080p/23.98) stutters noticeably when it plays back on MC4.0.5. The stutters is equally bad whether the media plays back via AMA or if its been transcoded to Avid media files (MXF) via one of the DNxHD codecs. The media lives on an internal sata drive on a MacPro. And I’m certain the problem isn’t with the original footage because when I play back the same footage in FCP there is no stutter.

Are you seeing any colored bars on the timecode track in the timeline

no, there are no colored bars in the timecode track of the timeline.
