Offline workflow for HDV
Hi,
I would like to edit an HDV project at an “offline” resolution similar to the old fashioned 15:1s that was available in SD projects. When capturing the only resolution available is “HDV 1080i MXF”, but i don’t currently have enough disc space to catpture at full res HDV.
I have looked through the avid help and creative cow forums.
Any help much appreciated,

At HDV data rates, how many footage do you have?
What deck do you have, and do you know how hard you can suffer redigging HDV?

I am using a Z1 connected directly to the firewire port on my mac.
I do know about the pains of conforming HDV, but at the moment I am living abroad and only have one drive with me.
The footage is a series of vox pops/short IVs so I am capturing each person as a separate clip up to 10mins duration, I have had problems in the past with timecode drift for longer clips .
I have found a workaround solution for the moment:
– capture as HDV
– open the bin in a diffrent DV project, transcode to 15:1s
Results in a offine 15:1s footage from HDV, but its a bit cumbersome.I did a short test of re-capturing a whole timeline as HDV with footage capturied in this way, and it seemed to work, and was frame accurate for a 15second clip.
Will I have problems further down the line? The edit is going to be relatibely simple, no effects of layering, so drift of a few frames should be acceptable if that happens in re-capturing.

Then why not ingest HDV, edit, consolidate with generous handles (and perhaps pieces you want to keep.)
I don’t care in what foreign country you are, but you should be able to pick up a decent 1 TB FW or USB drive anywhere in the world.
(Could be a few hours drive if you’re in deep africa, but then you can pay someone a dollar to do it for you.)
1 TB will give you like what, 70 hours of HDV?Redigging can be frame accurate, but will be dog slow. There are no problems, except for the problems you can solve manually, at the cost of attended redigging and added up to a minute per clip to capture.
