  • Mojo Analog not working with MC 3.5.1

Posted by Greg Thanos on August 4, 2009 at 8:24 am

There are dozens of posts on various forums regarding this frequent problem…most of these queries are unanswered, hoping someone here sees this and has a soluion.

Recently installed Media Composer 3.5.1 on Mac PRO 3.0 Quad Core. 7gb RAM. Original system was running Xpress Pro prior on OS 10.4.X. Mojo worked great then. In fact, I also tested the MOJO on my laptop (Macbook pro) running MC 3.5 and it worked fine. Then switched it back to Xpress pro and it also worked fine.

Then when upgrading Mac Tower to 10.5.5 so that Media Composer could run, it would not recognize the Mojo

On initial startup of MC 3.5.1 the error pops up

“No Avid DNA hardware detected” It then suggests you power cycle (15 seconds off) then restart the app.

    Have tried the following,

    1. Checked Firewire to ensure is not sharing with any other devices (it is plugged into the FW400 port) on the back of the machine, nothing is else is plugged. Also tried plugging it into the front of the machine’s FW 400 for shits and giggles, didn’t work.

    2. Uninstalled Avid Xpress Pro properly then reinstalled Media Composer. In fact I have sine re-installed MC 3.5.1 3 times.

    3. Tried upgrading to MC 3.5.4 , also nothing.

    4. System Profiler does recognize the Mojo under the Firewire tab.

    5. Host light is on.

So i’ve read that the Mojo’s firmware is automatically upgraded when connected to > Media Composer 3.0. Is there any way to check and or force the Mojo to upgrade it’s firmware on a Mac? Could switching from a MC 3.5 back to Avid Express Pro then back to MC 3.5 have caused a firmware issued with the Mojo?

I know the Mojo is not fried as it was working right before the OS X upgrade from Tiger to Leopard so that Media Composer 3.5 could be installed.

    Any thoughts?

    Thanks
    Greg

I feel your pain regarding the mojo. Ours has been hit and miss for some time now, and for the last few months simply doesn’t work. Even with a different mojo we get the same result, and we are no where near MC 3.5 yet. (MC 2.8.1) And the general response I get from reseller tech support is to ship the whole system, wipe the hard drive and be willing to pay for however many hours it might take to fix it. And since I believe it’s an inherent combination of software and hardware issues, I don’t have much faith it can be diagnosed, therefore, spending lots of money and still having the same problem is the most likely result. Anyway, sorry about the little rant there. Maybe this can help.

The only thing you didn’t mention on your list was trying a different FW cable. And use a higher quality wire as well. FW cables are such fragile things.

Do you have access to another mojo you can try?

    Good luck..

Maybe you need to replace your FW card for the MC 3.5.X version. I don’t know Mac so much but try to check if you have the right FW card.
    Good luck.

Maybe you need to replace your FW card for the MC 3.5.X Version. I don’t know Mac so well but check the Mac specs for the 3.5.X version maybe somthing in your system is not right anymore.
    Good luck.

Thanks to all who have responded.

RE: The Firewire 400port in the system…

The Mojo did work on the FW card with Xpress Pro, when I upgraded to Media Composer 3.5 it stopped working. So what you are saying is that Media Composer 3.5 could quite possibly not be compatible with the a Firewire port it was once compatible with in Xpress Pro?

I guess I wouldn’t put it past AVID. Where do I find the specs for MEdia Composer Hardware requirements that are as detailed as to which FW 400 ports are compatible.

Has anyone had any success using the FW 400 port in the back (or front for that matter) to connect an MOJO analog to a Mac Pro 3.0 Quad Core Tower?

    RE: Reinstalling the system.

Should I completely wipe off the system drive and start from scratch? I have reinstalled MC 3.5 several times…man this is frustrating.

Avid forces you to only use their hardware for breakouts / previewing etc, but then they have massive compatiblity issues. It’s just a bummer.

UPDATE. After doing several un-installs / re-installs, finally got the MOJO analog to be recognized by Media Composer 3.5

It took a much more intensive un-install then just using the un-install applications. Using this link from the Avid Knowledge Base,

    https://avid.custkb.com/avid/app/selfservice/search.jsp?DocId=274687&Hilite=uninstall+uninstall+procedure

Had to go into various folders and manually delete some files AFTER using all 4 of Avid’s Uninstaller programs. Then emptied trash, reinstalled MC 3.5 and the Mojo worked.

Thanks to all who chimed in and I hope this helps anyone with further issues on the subject.
