quicktime export
hello,
I have been trying to export a quicktime of a 70 minute movie. I am exporting same as source, my ftg is dv25 411. I am on a macbook pro 2.6 ghz, media composer 3.5, my external drive is a g tech raid2 and i am saving the quicktime to my macbook pro. my goal is to burn a dvd but the exported movie is 20 gigs and will not open in quicktime or load into compressor. i have quicktime 7.6.
any ideas what i am doing wrong? i have been trying for hours and searching the forums, i can not figure it out. please help.

You’ll wanna mix it down then export a reference file to Avid DVDit. It’ll encode a DVD for you.

i did finally do a mix down and it worked. do you know why i had to do a mix down to get it to work?
i converted the sample rates all to 48 but it still didn’t work until i did a mix down. i am compressing in compressor and then burn in dvdsp. thanks for your help.

Hi Pallas,
Your next problem is that DVDSP assumes your file has RGB levels. Avid spits out 601 levels unless you tell it otherwise. If your DVD looks washed out in the blacks, that is what is happening.

When avid “upgraded” their product line from meridien, a bug was introduced that adds interlacing to any and all precomputes. They have still not seen a reason to fix this bug.
As a result, we have to mix down our stuff with drive space we often don’t have and if you look real close, you’ll see that mixdown adds a few lines of blanking up top as well.
In short, they’d rather us sacrifice time, space and wuality to make web approvals and DVDs than to fix a bug that should have been fixed before a version 1 release. -

thanks for the info. to avoid the washed out blacks do i need to change the setting in dvdsp or is it better to change it in the avid export settings? also, i used compressor to compress. i am under the impression that compressing in compressor as opposed to dvdsp will make for a better looking dvd,
is this correct? or does dvdsp compress again making for an uglier dvd? thanks so much for sharing your info.

i didn’t mix down the video… only the audio. should i have mixed down the video as well?

I usually export a QT reference to Sorenson, set levels to be 16-235 and encode. AS TC points out, many encoders ecpect RGB levels to be 0-255. If that is the case, select RGB when exporting QT ref from Media Composer.

is this correct? or does dvdsp compress again making for an uglier dvd?”Compressor does the compression to create the MPEG files. DVDSP “Muxes”, or mixes all the data into one data stream. No compression is actually happening there.
I don’t think Compressor has a setting to interpret 601 levels, ( I reserve the right to be wrong here) so you would have to do it at the export from Avid stage.

Huh? Can you elaborate on this?
Are precomputes not simply in their same-as-source mediatype (p/i)?
