  Editing in both 4:3 and 16:9

  Hi,

  I have footage in both 4:3 and 16:9 that I want to combine in the same project. I want the final film to be 16:9.
  Is it possible with Avid to put 16:9 bars on the 4:3 footage and then edit both formats together seamlessly, or are there problems with that?

  Also, if that does work, how do I export the project when done?

  I am using Avid Media Composer 3.1

  Yes, you can mix sources. Set your project for 16:9. Avid will stretch the windows and make effects work for 16:9.

  When you have 4:3 material, go to the reformat tab in the effects window. You will see an effect that gives you the black sidebars.

  Or you can drop the reformat effect on and select 4:3 source and 16:9 final. This will give you an outline in the effects window that you can slide up and down (Tilt and scan) toe select framing. When you leave effects mode, it will stretch your footage vertically to fill the 16:9 window.

  You export the timeline as any other one except that you want to make sure to select 16:9 in the export window options tab.

  Hi,

  Is there a way to have both native 16:9 footage and 4:3 in the same project, and make the 4:3 appear to be 16:9. without the sidebars?
  I want the finished project to appear to be all in 16:9 without sidebars

  You will work in 16×9, then drop the reformat effect on your 4X3 footage.

  Open the effect in the effect editor and choose 4X3 for source and 16X9 for target. This will blow up the 4X3 footage vertically to make it look right in 16X9.

  You can move the framing up and down as needed in the reformat effect window.

  Hi

  Thanks for all your help first of all.
  When I drag the reformat effect on to the clip, I don’t get any options to change the source or target in the Effects Editor window… Is this normal, or am I missing something?

  That is not correct if you are using the right effect.

  Drag the “Pan & Scan” effect from the “Reformat” sub heading in the effects.

  Then look up Pan and Scan under your help menu for how to use it.
