I have a project that I am moving from an old Avid Express system to a new Media Composer system on a Mac Pro.

It appears that the vast majority of material is transferring perfectly – no problems with AVR resolutions (AVR 3,12,77), and no problems with audio sample rates, audio sounds fine.

But there are some files – files that appear in all respects exactly the same as the acceptable files – that MC is rejecting.

Most of the rejected files are audio files, and most of those are associated with video- so I’m trying to maintain that linkage. Other clips, digitized at the same exact time, on the same day, work fine. The video plays with it’s associated audio, no problem.

The audio plays fine in Quicktime – so the media is not corrupt, is seems there’s just something about the file name that Avid doesn’t like.

The message I receive as MC is building a new database is “does not appear to be an OMF file” with the usual quarantine or ignore options.

    What I’ve tried so far:

I can import the audio files into a bin individually and get a nice audio-only file – but this, of course, does not keep the association with the video.

I have tried copying one of the audio files and completely re-typing the file name (2035A02.B77B89DE_B6B77B… and so on), but it is still rejected out of hand.

I have tried renaming an audio file as an AIFF or .mov – just to see what it might do – it doesn’t reject the files as it builds the database, but the audio stays offline.

On the old system, I tried consolidating one of the video/audio clips so that I have a completely new file. That’s an unfinished experiment – I haven’t imported that into the Mac Pro yet to see if it accepts it.

At this point, if that works, it looks like I’ll go that route.

What do you think? Any more elegant solutions?

    Thanks,
    Bob

Was the sound by any chance SD2? I don’t think too many current Avid systems would support that.

RE – SD2 files: They are only designated as an “Avid Media File” in the info tab, and identified as “.omf” files. Quicktime plays them just fine, whatever they are.

The crazy thing is that they look exactly the same as files that Avid recognizes. I have two video clips, digitized with audio, from the same tape at the same time into the same project on the same drive.
One clip plays back fine, the other, the audio files are rejected by Avid (when building a database) and only the video comes up in the project.

Both clips are recognized, and play back properly when brought up on the old system. Very puzzling.

By the way, my hopes of just consolidating my way out of this problem have been dashed. The new consolidated audio files were rejected just the same as the originals.

    Hello

Do you have opportunity to transcode in your older avid? That might make the clips work. I have faced similar problem with interplay and old Xpress OMF-files and what I did was just copy paste in standalone mode ( no interplay connection) and then I removed mediadatabase files ans allowed Avid rescan the omf mediafiles folders. When avid creating mediadatabase files again it eats more easily “old material”

    Hello

Is there any change to transcode those clips in your older Avid?
That might help to transcode those omf-clips to mxf. I have once done in interplay environment where we needed old omf-files from Xpress. All orthodox methods gave us very similar situation what you have now, so I switched edit to standalone mode and just copy pasted material to unitys workspace omf mediafiles folder and the I forced Avid scan media again ( remove media datbase files) and then I got my old omf-files fully working.
