record audio/video straight to timeline
Is it possible to record audio or video straight to a timeline in AVID? I think it is possible in FCP. I am running Symphony Nitris.

As long as you have the right connections going to the deck, of course it is. Avid was built to lay things to tape. You can either crash record, or insert edit. The only thing you would probably need is GENLOC going to both the Nitris and the deck. Oh, and an RS422/RS432 converter (Addendum makes them – google ‘rosetta stone and machine control) for deck control.

Not sure if my question was clear enough…..i am talking about coming from a source (tape machine, mic, dvd, etc) and capturing INTO the avid and having the media go straight to your timeline? for example, if i had video on V1 and i wanted to record a voice over to it . Can I do an audio capture that will go directly to my timeline?

If you want to record a VO with your video, look into the Audio Punch-In Tool. It’s designed to do this.
If you want to use the capture tool to capture directly to your timeline, go to your Capture settings, the Edit tab, and enable “Enable edit to timeline (splice, overwrite)” and set your handles. Once you check that box you’ll get the Red and Yellow splice-in/overwrite arrows available in your Capture tool. Before you capture, click whichever one you want and whatever you capture will be overwritten/spliced-in to your timeline.
