Mojo sync problems?
Posted by Robert Hanna on December 30, 2008 at 12:04 pmI’m considering adding the MOJO SDI hardware interface to my Avid XPress Pro setup – or I might change to Avid Media Composer with the Mojo – I’m trying to ultimately get my film onto HDCAM tape for delivery – I need to get all the audio onto tracks 1+2 and just the SFX and Music onto tracks 3+4. Some editors have told me these MOJO systems have sync problems when outputting to tape. (especially on longer tapes upwards to 94 min)
Has anyone experienced these audio sync issues? or some successes with this output to HDCAM tape?

December 30, 2008 at 1:01 pmNo sync problems as long as you have proper referance.
But your real issue is Mojo SDI does not suport HD. It’s SD only.Scott Cumbo

December 30, 2008 at 1:09 pmYou’re right. I need Hi Def. Do they make a MOJO for HD?
Maybe the sync problems I heard about occur when making multi passes. If I can dump the entire audio mix on 1 and 2 and the SFX+Music onto 3 and 4 in on pass – maybe that’s the situation where it best syncs up.

December 30, 2008 at 1:53 pmAs long as you get a black burst generator, and run it to your deck and the mojo, you’ll have no synch issues. No need to lay audio and video in two passes. That is, provided you have an certified system, and the deck has rs422 (9-pin control). Firewire control (at least on the Pannie decks I’ve used) won’t let you insert edit. And to use rs422, you’ll need a device similiar to the Rosetta Stone Bottom line, check your deck against Avid’s certified device list. You may not even be able to insert based on your deck.
Avid does make a HD IO – the Mojo DX. For the 10k Avid wants, I’d invest in a Sony EX or a Panasonic P2…

December 30, 2008 at 2:22 pmSince you’re on Xpress Pro you can upgrade to Media Composer and the MojoDX (HD Mojo) for $5,000. Avid has backed off the $7-$10K price.

December 31, 2008 at 12:59 amOr if you don’t want to invest in too much equipment, take your
project & Media to a post house and have them lay it off for you.
Will only cost you a few hours of edit time plus stock (cheaper if you bring your own stock)Scott Cumbo

December 31, 2008 at 7:19 amThank you everyone for your great suggestions. This has been the dilemma – our plan up to now was to just go to a post house and dub it off. My head editor is the one that said there were sync issues with the mojo – he’s pushing to take my entire film and convert all the media for AVID Nitrous and print it to tape from there – but the Post house will charge an arm and a leg for all the time to convert the media. So – I was weighing the cost of getting the MOJO DX. Looks like I’d still have to pay the post house for the actual transfer to HD CAM if I brought in the MOJO.

I’ve gotten around this by creating a video mixdown before laying off.
