Compression questions
Hello peoples.
I have a few questions on compression I need answered.
Firstly I have a hv30 that records onto hdv tape.
The first lot of footage I shot was 65 mins long. After capturing it through my editing program it produced about 10-15 gig of data on my hard drive. I’ve been told avi is the highest quality format to render to. When I rendered to avi the final product was then 28 gig.
Did this uncompress my footage? I’ve read that to get high definition footage onto a hd tape the camera needs to compress the footage.
The reason I’ve started this thread is because I’d like to store my footage in the highest quality format possible. Friends have been telling me that exporting back to the tape seems to be the most common option. Hard drive space isn’t a problem and if rendering it to avi is a better option than exporting back to tape then that’s more desirable to me. Can someone please explain the best way to store my original footage in the exact quality that I filmed it.

Don’t let people confuse you with avi nonsense. There are uncompressed quicktimes, image sequences and many other uncompressed ways for export.
That said, you shot on a miniDV tape. This places your raw footage compressed at 5:1 and living in a 4:1:1 color field. While you can increase file sizes with whatever, you cannot remove the loss recorded on that tape.
FWIW, I capture HDV at dv25. It’s a clone from the tape. At 1:1, i’d just be eating more drive space.I have had no use for avi files in several years.

What about when it comes to exporting the finished edit. cs4 has a lot of different options for rendering. I last used “1440 x 1080i 25 high quality” to render. Will that compress the footage? I’ve read film runs at 24p (not that I’m working with film yet) but there’s also an option for “hdtv 1080p 24 high quality” which I assume is for compressing to mix with film. There’s also options for “hdtv 1080p 25” and “hdtv 1080p 29.7” I assume the 29.7 is ntsc. Whats the difference between “1440 x 1080i” and “hdtv 1080i”? Is hdtv 1960?

Here’s some answers for you.

Depends on how your rendering. I presume your not using AVID for this because of your mention of CS4?!? If your using another program such as After Effects how much compression you add will depend on how you have captured, exported and rendered the footage. Codec selection is the critical point here. If your capturing at DV25 (in AVID) that’s good but if you export as a PhotoJPEG then of course you will be compressing it.I’ve read film runs at 24p (not that I’m working with film yet) but there’s also an option for “hdtv 1080p 24 high quality” which I assume is for compressing to mix with film.
No 1080p 24 is for working with footage that has been shot 24fps. Putting 25p or 50i footage in a project with those setting will not make it 24fps, if anything the playback will be screwed. If you want a film look but aren’t finishing on film try 25p. The frame rate stays as it should for PAL TV/Video playback and saves a whole world of pain.There’s also options for “hdtv 1080p 25” and “hdtv 1080p 29.7” I assume the 29.7 is ntsc.

HDTV 1080i is 1920 x 1080 pixels i.e. full broadcast HD.Hope this helps. Like Grinner i can’t remember the last time i used AVI. In my experience there are much better formats out there. AVI creates huge problems and is limited by file size when exporting from AVID.
