  Avid file names decoder ring?

  So I have this huge project that I’m consolidating to another drive so I can shelf it, and it’s mostly P2 media and other mxf media, but it all won’t fit, so I need to delete some of it.

  Most of the media in the mxf folders is fairly easy to recognize what it is and where it came from, but I have a TON of these other files that are named accordingly:

  “ProjectName – 09-02-048C042CE.mxf”

  Which closely corresponds to how I named the sequence in my sequences bin, followed by the date:

  “ProjectName – 09-02-08”

  Are these files just renders, precomputes, etc that can be deleted and then re-rendered if need be? Anyone out there fully fluent in Avid-ese, or know where to find an Avid to English dictionary?

  You really should be using the Media Tool within Avid for this.

  Open the Media Tool and choose to show Media Files. Select some shots in your bin that you no longer need, then go to your bin’s Fast Menu and choose to Select Media Relatives. It will select all the media files in your Media Tool related to the clips you selected in your bin. Delete it you don’t need them.

  Otherwise, select some shots in your bin you no longer need and hit Delete. Choose to delete the Media only (don’t delete the master clips–you may want to have the option to recapture them later).

  How big is this project? Can’t you just buy 1 or 2 terrabyte drives and consolidate to those?

  There is a console command that can rename mediafiles to something more logical.
  BUT, i’ve been bitten by this one once, somehow a lot of my media went offline and could not be relinked.

  So, i second the media tool for maintanance.

  Media Tool is ultimately what I used, along with Media Mover. I think my problem was I used Media mover first, plus I still am reluctant to completely trust the Media Tool for some reason – I still wish there was a bit more logic to how Avid names it’s files for peace of mind.
