    Hey guys,

We have Avid Xpress Pro where I work, and for some reason I’m having a lot of trouble importing files that have alpha channel info, like pre-made lower thirds, etc. This stuff imports fine in Final Cut, but for some reason in Avid the black areas aren’t keying out. When I import the clips is DOES say that it’s creating Alpha Channel info… but then it doesn’t work right on my timeline (and yes, I’m rendering). I’ve been through every setting I can think of. Can anyone help?

In the import settings you have to make sure that you set the alpha to invert alpha….Avid works differently than other systems, in that white is tranparent and black is opaque….other systems use the white for opaque and black for transparency.

Thanks, I just tried this, and now I don’t get anything at all. I drag the clip down onto my timeline and nothing shows up in my viewer. If I delete the alpha my clip shows up, but again, the black isn’t keyed out. Please help!

    Thanks!

It sounds to me like your alpha is not right…bring the clip into After Effects, if you have it, and check out the alpha….my bet is that the alpha is a full screen….when you are reversing it, it is normal that everything dissapears.

That sounds about right. Is there any way to fix this without going into After Effects every time?

    Thanks guys!

All I’m trying to do is import some pre-made lower third clips from an Editor’s Toolkit set. Has anyone done this on Avid and gotten it to work properly?

what sort of files are you making?
quite a few avid qt codecs don’t carry alpha
I find png sequences set to millions of colours+ on export from after effects work best

You may need to make sure that you have “Render on-the-fly” turned on. This is under the “special” pull-down menu at the top of the frame. That and remembering to reverse alphas on import are usually the 1st two gotchas.
