We have new 2.8GHz MacPros running OS10.5.3, Media Composer 3.0, with ATI Radeon HD 2600 XT boards. We’ve been getting some odd behavior and a repeated error message. While researching it, I realized that Avid doesn’t certify ATI graphics card in this machine for MC3 and I’m wondering if this is the cause of the problems. Does anyone know what issues might appear with ATI cards?

When playing a timeline for some time, the playback will stop and the error “End of Media on ‘filename'” will appear. This doesn’t seem to be associated with the actual end of media or a clip on the timeline.

Another problem is the audio in one particular project will intermittently run out of sync. If we stop the playback it will sometimes correct itself when started again, sometimes not. Other projects are fine.

Any ideas or information on the above would be appreciated. I’d rather not have to buy a new boards especially since it’s multiple machines and I don’t know if the ATI boards are really the problem.

    Thanks.

    Russ,

I don’t know if the exact problems you mention are related to the unapproved video card, but it sounds like it easily could be the problem. I have had similar problems with systems where the driver is out of date (or unapproved to begin with) on an approved video card.

Avid software is very specific about the video cards and drivers needed to run their systems. I know it’s a pain if you are from the “build-it-yourself” school, and I can’t beign to go into detail on all the technical reasons why the software requires such specificity, but this is the case.

Please check here for the approved, supported cards and drivers:
