  free-run timecode problems

  Hi

  We’re editing a 30 min feature film.

  The sound was recorded using free-run timecode and (for some reason) it doesn’t match the TC on the video.
  The production house have now given us the video and audio synced in seperate timelines. So I have about 25 hours of footage laid out in about 28 seperate sequences. And each synced clip is seperated by lots of empty space/slug. There are two audio tracks from the camera and two from sound.

  How do I edit with this?
  If I autosync or group clips and create subclips, I’ll loose the sync that the production house created in the sequences and when we hand over the finished cut to the soundguy it will create mahem.

  The on-set-soundguy (the same one that lost sync in the first place…) says we should create seperate masterclips, from the synced sequences, with a NEW timecode. Is this an option? How do I do that?

  Any help will be greatly appreciated, pretty new to Avid (Media Composer).

  Interesting way to deliver dailies…

  For each span of active picture/sound in the timeline, mark IN and OUT and subclip to a new bin. Rename as appropriate such as 1/1, 12A/3 etc. based on your naming preferences for each shot. Once completed, select all the sequences and then AutoSync. The sequences become a subclip with sync V/A.

  Thanks for replying.

  So even if all the tapes have the same timecode, they will refer back to more info than just the actual TC numbers?
  I’m worried that the soundguy will look at the TC1 A1 (for example) and it will say 10:03:04:05 but he won’t know from which tape. Because there’s 28 tapes that all start on 10:00:00:00

  If picture and sound came in from different sources, then added to the timeline for sync, the V will still track to its original sources and audio will track to its. But not knowing exactly how the facility did the sound when bringing it in, it is hard to say, If you do a match frame then get to the bin to find the original sources, what does the Tape column say for each track?

  Thanks Michael for your response. There are different tape names, so I think that should be OK. The problem is that some, or most, of the TC on sound doesn’t match the TC from the camera, so it’s all been (sort of) synched on the timeline.

  I’ve never worked like this and editing with sequences as my dailies/rushes instead of clips/subclips is not making it easier.
