  • Best way from 4×3 to 16×9

    Hello all,

I am editing a series of videos that where all shot 4×3, but need to be given to the client to project on a 16×9 screen, and they don’t want anything to stretch. And I guess I should say that I am editing on an Avid Symphony Nitris system (v1.7.7)

What I have done thus far is to edit the piece as a 4×3 with the 16×9 letterbox filter over my video as a reference. Then I duplicate the finished sequence and replace the 16×9 filter with the Pan and Scan filter, setting my source as 4×3, and my target as 16×9. When rendered, this basically creates a zoomed and cropped 16×9 anamorphic video.

This seems to work OK, but since it is going to be projected on a pretty big screen, I want to make sure that I am getting the best resolution possible (considering I am throwing away alot of the original resolution). And I also don’t want graphical elements to get fuzzy.

A colleague suggested exporting a QT Ref, then importing into an HD project, then exporting an SD 16×9 clip (in essence upconverting then downconverting). this will be a very time consuming workflow that I can only afford if it makes a difference. With one test run so far, I don’t see a big difference, although creating a DVD of a few finished projects and watching them on a 16×9 big screen will be the ultimate test.

Sorry for the longwinded explanation, but I just want to know if anyone has any other ideas or techniques that may provide me with the highest quality, highest resolution final product (storage is not an issue).

    Thanks,

    Mark

naaaa. if it’s being projected, just letterbox it. They can adjust size, ect. You will only lose rez by blowing it up.
you can throw this on as filler over the whole sequence and it’ll all be done with one drop.
FYI, a resize with highth at 75 percent is better than th aliased letterbox filter. I dunno how ya alias a horizontal line but they’ve managed it.

I’m not sure that this will be possible. I forgot to mention that the DVD clips will be referenced and played by a Power Point presentation that will definately be 16×9, so if they are coming from the same projector, I need the video to be 16×9 as well. I running a few tests today. Worst case scenario is that I edit all the video, convert it to anamorphic, then create all my titles as 16×9 and layer them on top of the pan and scan so they don’t get fuzzy.

unless I am misunderstanding, you can select 16X9 in your export settings.
