You do not mention what type of media you are trying to export. But the error message suggests you are working with HDV or something similar.

These compressed HD formats (long-GOP meaning “long Groups-of-Pictures”)will not export as QT reference files. You will need to export as a full QT file or another format.

I’ve been scratching my head all night trying to work out the best settings to export HDV footage.

I have a timeline that’s over an hour long, mixed format (HDV/DVCProHD) and I need to export approval copies onto DV tape and DVD. Obviously I can’t export as a QTR, so I’ve tried every possible variation of MOV and I can’t reach a balance between massive file sizes (2GB for 1 minute) and horrible video noise, indeed often I achieve both.

I’m running Avid Xpress Pro v5.5.3 on a Dell Precision M90.

Any help much appreciated as I’m out of ideas and time….!

Try transcoding your sequence to another drive at the resolution of your choice. Then export to QT reference the transcoded sequence. That’s how I do it.
