  • Aspect Ratio and Interlacing (HELP please!)

Posted by Fallen Avid on April 20, 2007 at 11:29 pm

Hello, I have Quicktime media files on my external hard drive (from a telecine) that I am trying to batch import into Avid Xpress Pro. The QT files are not 4:3 like the Xpress Composer window.

When I import at “601, non-square” or “Maintain, non-square”, the files distort the aspect ratio to fill the 4:3 Composer window. They are otherwise fine. In playback in the Avid and when exported, they play with minor interlacing issues, as expect. Then when burned to DVD, this goes away.

However, when I import at “Maintain, square” or “Maintain and Resize, square”, because I am assuming the QT files used square pixels in the telecine, the aspect ratio is perfect. The files do not distort, and instead there are letterboxing black bars in the Composer window. This is fine.

However, playback, export, and DVD play are all awful. The interlacing issues are so bad that it looks like a jigsaw puzzle. The screen is like this (assume the lines are the image):
    _____……..
    ….______…
    _____……..

What am I doing wrong, and what can I do to fix it? Please help.

    Thanks,
    Mike

thats seriosly the best descriptive I have seen here, man.
    😉
I’m not sure about this but try a video mixdown of your entire sequence. I have only had interlacing woes over precomputes but the mixdown does fix those.

Video mixdown didn’t work, unfortunately. Thanks for the suggestion. Any others?

well, is DVD your final format? I know it’s bogus but is it possible to live with it in playack and then just burn the DVDs?
still just stabbing in the dark here.
what if you first bring these files into After Effects and re render to your liking? That’d work if you have the time.

    Try importing Lower Field first

Thanks a lot. That did it. I forgot that after telecine, the NTSC video is lower field first.

I really really appreciate the help.
