Currently, I am trying to figure out how to move my documentary project off of an old dinosaur Avid Quadra 950 Media Composer 5.6 software 7.2.1. My project media is on 4 portable drives (2 18 gig and 2 9 gig). Everything is connected by scsi cables.

I am interested in purchasing an Avid Express Educational Model. Can the newest Avid Express Educational model operate off of a G4? If not, what version of Avid Express Educational model will work on a G4 with 1 gig of ram? Also, I have Mac OS 10.3.1 what version would I need to upgrade to work on any of the Avid Express systems? I can’t afford to buy a G5. Is there a difference with the Avid Express Educational models vs Avid Express Pro or other Avid Express systems? Can you still do effects, dissolves, etc?

It would be ideal if I could move my media off the drives they are on now and continue working in Avid Express. Is it possible to move my media (which is at 3s resolution) off the portable drives to a 1/2 terrabyte portable drive or will I need to redigitize everything? Will the cuts move over? I did a test on an Adrenaline and the cuts showed up in tact. I realize that I will have to redigitize at full resolution for the final cut. What kind of Mojo will I need when I redigitze.

I also need to figure a solution to how to retrieve from the AVID the logged information off my bins with interviews and broll, is there a way to retrieve the information off the logs? In case, I do have to redigitize everything. These logs are my records of what’s on the tapes. Last but not least, any suggestions in the LA area of where to purchase an Avid Express for a G4, and 1/2 terrabyte portable drive? Thank you in advance for your support.

    It looks like you’ll need a G5:

More ram is always better – go with 2gb.

I’m pretty sure you can’t bring media from your Quadra system to the XPress Pro. The Quadra used the ABVB boardset, and the next major release was the OMFI file system (If I remember correctly – somebody correct me if I’m wrong).

You should be able to bring your project in (all your cuts, tape info, etc.) with no problem at all.

Unless its dead, it might be cheaper to finish your cut on the Quadra, then rent a machine to finish. Just a thought.

I’m not in LA, but I’ve bought two Avid Xpress pro machines from CEAVCO in Denver. Tell Rachel I sent you.
