  Mixing HD and SD footage: timecode issues?

  I just started testing our Avid NewsCutter Adrenaline system to see what the workflow is for putting SD footage into an HD project. At first, the capture tool wasn’t seening anything, but then I switched the project format back to NTSC, and then could see my SD source. There is already HD footage in the project. Next, I marked an in and out point on my tape and tried to tell Avid to capture the clip… but then I get an error about how the current tape is drop frame and it was expecting non-drop.

  Two questions…

  First: Is there a better way to bring in SD footage to an HD project?

  Next: Is there a way to get the NewsCutter to stop whining and just do the time code conversion itself?

  As for capturing SD into an HD project, I can’t help you. Haven’t worked in HD yet.

  Concerning your tape issue–just rename your tape. This happens every once in a while and that’s about the only way to fix it. To help prevent your Avid from reading your tape wrong, pop it in and let it roll for a little bit, giving Avid time to detect the Timecode. Otherwise it will assume it’s whatever you have set for your default (DF or NDF). Once Drop or NonDrop is associated with a tape name it can’t be changed. Just give the tape a new name and it’ll fix it.

  Mike is right, it likely doesn’t have anything to do with HD vs. SD. IF your footage is at the same frame rate.

  Avid’s Open Timeline approach will allow you to mix SD and HD footage interchangeably all day if the frame rate is identical.
