  • Can I use the same sequence and switch between high and low res?

Posted by Iann Mcgill on December 29, 2006 at 6:03 pm

Okay, basically here’s what zi want to do…
I want to take my project transcode it to DV25, put it on an external drive, copy my sequences and take it home to work on it. WHILE leaving my video on my avid at work at 2:1. Do some editing at home, and come back to work, and somehow re-sync my “at home” sequence to my at work 2:1 video. Can that be done painlessly. It’s just that it’s a long weekend, and I would like to be able to get some work done.

    Thank you,
    Jesse

There is a relink by resolution option in the relink dialogue box for that purpose.

    anything 24fps

    Thanks Micheal!
Def. on the right track. Will you walk me through it a little more clearly. I’m going to transcode my 2:1 video to DV25, go home and work on it on my Xpress — come back to work Tuesday, and take the sequence I had been using over the weekend, bring it back on to my avid here at work. Then all I do is “right click it”, relink the new sequence, and select “relink offline non-master clips to any online items”, under “Video Relink Parameters:” what should I choose when relinking my sequence back to the 2:1 video?
    Relink Method: Specific Resolution
Relink if quality: is great to or equal, is equal to, or less than or equal to 2:1

I guess I’m just a little weary. Thank you for the help.

I duplicated my original sequence, and placed it into another bin.
Highlighted all of the video clips I wanted to transcode, right clicked the highlighted clips and selected “consolidate/transcode”.
Transcoded my video to DV25, and saved them to my external drive – Avid created duplicates of it, and renamed them – Avid kept both resolutions online
I took my test DV25 video and put it into my new test sequence. Then I selected the sequence in the bin, right-clicked, selected “relink”, and chose “Specific Resolution” from the drop down menu
and “Relink if Quality is ‘greater than or equal to’, ‘2:1’.
The only thing I unchecked was “create a duplicate sequence”.
    Select OK
Avid then went through and found my 2:1 video and replaced the DV25 footage in my sequence.

This is great news incase you ever need to work from home!

Transcode any material you need to a portable drive (ie firewire).
Copy your project folder with it also.
Open the project in your XPro at home. Avid will automatically reconnect. You dont have to do anything.
Once you move your sequence bin to your Avid at work, Avid will again automatically reconnect (except for render files aka precomputes) to your 2:1 media since that is the only available media in this Avid.

There is no need to go through the relink dialogue box unless you have different resolution of the same media residing in the same Avid – which you will not (home Avid = DV, work Avid = 2:1) or having technical issues or conflicts.

Bottom line is, as long as media with the same TC and tape name exist, Avid will automatically reconnect for you. Manual reconnect for the workflow you are desrcibing is rarely needed.

I wasn’t able to make it automatically connect. But what I did find out the hard way, is that even though I was able to transcode my project, many of the advanced effects that I use at work, I do not have at home. Therefore practically making it useless for me to bring home. For example, the project I’m working on is completely on greenscreen, and I used Spectramatte to key all of my clips out. So once I came home, booya, no spectramatte, no video. Also, Xpress doesn’t have a 3D effect in the “blend” mode, again, “booya” no effect, no video. 🙂 So, it’s like my express is only good for beginning projects, not continuing to work on them.

    Does anyone have any advice?

    Media Composer software version. 🙂
You can always borrow the dongle from work.

You can do one better…you can capture at 15:1 and edit your piece and then recapture at whatever res, including hd, that you want. Its called doing an offline and onlining it. Avid does it quite well and the 15:1 takes up very liitle space. great for doing it on a laptop.

Yeah, but see here’s the rub. I already have it all online at work. I just wanted to be able to transcode it to DV25, edit at home, then have the sequence I used at home, relink to my 2:1 video back here in the office. I have already spent the time digitizing at low res, doing the initial rough cut, and then up-resing to 2:1. But still, haven’t found a real solid solution to my problem

I must have missed your post above where you said you didn’t have the same effects in your home puter as the office one. In which case you need to upgrade your home computer…Lets say you do that…wouldn’t a portable hard drive meet your needs. Carry copies of the media and project files back and forth from office to home. Heck, they’re freakin’ huge these days. Maybe you can even get work to buy you one…
