How They Do That? Layered Video
Hello to all, everything has been fine so far, so I haven’t had the reason to post on the site in a while, but I’m curious as to how music videos/films use layered video. I understand that if they leave the camera in the same location, same angle, and don’t have the character cross the center of the frame, then they should be able to layer the video properly. But as far as editing, how do they layer it for editing purposes? Is is After Effects, Avid? Or something different?
I know in Avid, their is the Superimpose, but the video won’t be the same opacity. Any ideas? I have the Avid Express Pro HD on PC. Just curious

all you do is lay clip 1 (without person in it) on the timeline.
then put clip two next in the timeline (with someone in it)
you can slip the edit so that your in point on the second clip contains the person already in scene.
or
you can use a cross dissolve from clip 1 to 2. this will mamke the person slowly appear in the shot.
it is very easy to do.
noone will know that you actually cut to the next shot because the backgrounds are completeley the same.

If you want one person standing next to themselves, shoot it so they don’t take up the same space in the room (say one person stage right, then other stage left) and lock off the camera. Shoot the person doing their bit stage right, then shoot them again stage left. Cut your two shots onto V1 and V2, apply a PIP to V2, crop it off so doesn’t cover the person on V1 and voila! You now have one person, on screen, standing next to themselves. If you want them to walk around or cross you’ll have to either rotoscope one of them out or shoot the scene empty (background plate) and try to pull a difference matte. Search these forums and the After Effects forums for some good info on rotoscoping and matting techniques.

A simple mask will allow you to do this too. Stack your 2 video layers on top of each other, then apply a mask to separate the 2 layers, hiding half of each one. In Media Composer, you can do this with Animatte. In XPro, you’ll need Avid FX, Boris Red, Boris FX, or you’ll have to enlist the help of After Effects, Combustion, etc.

…Or you could use a wipe on layer two. Use the wipe as a segment effect instead of a transition. Wipes are our friends. Just ask George Lucas…
