media offline on duplicate project drive
i’m working on a video project with someone else where i took his FW drive and copied the contents onto a freh new FW drive so that i have the full project (with all the media, etc) with me as well. however when i open the project on My new drive all the media is offline! I figured this would happen, which is why i duplicated the drive by dragging the icon for the source drive onto the desktop icon of the brand new fresh drive so as to get an exact replica and to maintain the integrity of the file path. This worked perfectly well when i did it for a Final Cut Pro project! As long as i did it in this manner i didn’t need to relink the files at all. So why isn’t it working when I do it this way for the Avid Xpress Pro project?
In other words, how do i copy or clone the drive so I won’t need to relink the files on the new drive. And if i do have to reconnect the media, then how can i make sure that when i reconnect the media for the NEW DRIVE that it won’t unlink the media on the original drive when i decide to load up the original drive instead? -

Is the MediaFiles folder at the root level of the hard drive? If not, it needs to be. All you need to do in the future is copy the MediaFiles folder and not worry about dragging source drive icons and the such. The project will just light up when opened. I have done this thousands of times as well as work cross country with a co-editor the same way.

I’m a little confused as to what you’re asking, but I think you’re wanting to know how to get your project to recognize the media on the new Firewire drive, right?
1st: Is all of the media at the root of the drive in a folder called OMFI MediaFiles? Note the exact spelling and capitalization. If this new firewire drive is showing up as, say, the F:\ drive, your media should be located in F:\OMFI MediaFiles. If your OMFI MediaFiles folder is anywhere else, your Avid won’t see it.
2nd: Open your OMFI MediaFiles folder and delete the two database files. Restart Avid. It will rebuild the media databases and should relink your media to the new Firewire.
Now, if you have both drives plugged in you’ll likely have problems. After all, how is Avid going to know which files to point to? Just use one drive plugged in at a time. Good luck.
