What is appropriate Avid system(s) for a project which is a multicamera 2 day shoot 10 Plus cameras (mix of HD (mostly HD) and HDV). Final delivery of project is likely SD DVD but there is interest in HD-DVD. Probably 12-15 hours of content to be boiled down to this DVD. There’s a discussion of Final Cut Pro HD vs going out and getting a “full blow avid system”. Budget while not limitless is significant but suspect lack of avid skills will require outtasking that work which will add significantly to labor costs (an assumption).

Interested in hearing anyones perspective on this. There’s no technology religion here at the moment, more interested in ensuring the right tools for the job are aquired in time to kick start the project.

    Regards,

    Jim

When you say HD, do you mean DVCPro 100 HD, and HDV, or something do mean something higher up the food chain?

Higher up the food chain. Uncompressed HD, this was a large public event. Last minute changes in the choice of production and the desire to pull in house.

Take a look at the Avid Media Composer Adrenaline then.

Perhaps talk to a dealer and see if you can get a demo to see how well it compares to FCP with a Kona HD card if that sounds interesting to you.

Regarding the DVD authoring; There is a new Toolkit said to release in June or somewhere in that area that will have a Blu-Ray capable version of DVDit Pro 6. At this point, I don’t know of any authoring applications that are actually ready for HD-DVD or Blu-Ray with the exception of Sonic Scenarist.

There are very few HD-DVD players out there. The ones that are out look as if they are hand made or something. So SD DVD for now, and hopefully, a lot of the existing low-cost software will soon become HD-DVD or Blu-Ray capable.

    Hope that helps.

Actually, if you want to remain in and output uncompressed HD, Media Composer Adrenaline HD is NOT the system you want to use…you’ll want to check out Symphony Nitris. All the power/features of MCA, plus a few extras and the ability to work with 2 streams of uncompressed HD in real-time.

However, to back up Alex’s suggestion, you might (for cost’s sake) want to cut on a Media Composer Adrenaline HD system for your offline, then online on Symphony Nitris for your final uncompressed output.

It all depends upon what your needs and final output plans are. I COMPLETELY support Alex’s suggestion to check out both a decked-out FCP system with Kona/Decklink, and then compare it to a high-end Avid system (MCA or SN).

Just finished a major 10 camera(HDCAM)5 hour concert. Offlined downconverted HDCAM(DV codec) using Final Cut Pro HD, G5 with extremely fast huge HDD. The multicam feature worked flawlessy as well as the overall editing expereince with FCP HD. Ready for finishing and recaptured edited show using 10bit uncompressed HD using BlackMagic HD pro card. I’m sure you’ll be doing effects/color correction so be aware of rendering and time consumption in doing this on a FinalCut system. If time is essence and need results fast while finishing consider Symphony Nitris or Matrox Axio, although they’ll cost alot more. Also consider DVD studio Pro and its capabilities creating a blu-ray volume. I use both Avid/FCP, previously edited a 12 source show on Avid and while Avid is superior for organization/robustness it was a treat to finish everything from beginning to end on a FCP system which cost a fraction of the other. If cost are a consideration this is a no brainer.
