Random frame hiccups with Avid exports (mac)
Looking for some help on this one. I’m doing some After Effects work for a colleague who is exporting his work (Meridien compressed 2:1) via Media Composer on OS9 (version 11, I believe). His exports seem to be contracting some random frame glitches that are really giving us some headaches. I say random because it doesn’t seem to make them in the same place twice on subsequent exports.
The After Effects work is being done on an OSX system with Quicktime 7.0.4 (0.1 thru 0.3 did work either). I originally had the Avid codecs on my system that came with Avid Free DV (versions 9.4.4 for Avid AVUI and 9.4.3 for AVDJ) but when I got to the frames in question, everything just quit – After Effects, Quicktime Player, The Finder, you name it. I downgraded my codecs to 9.4.2 and this has at least allowed me to *see* the problem. I’m guessing it’s an interlace issue or a Quicktime issue (or both) and have posted some frames here: http://www.formstand.com/frameglitch.html
What’s most curious – or frustrating – is that on the Avid system, the bad frames don’t always appear when stepping through frame by frame in QT player, but do show up in the Record monitor during playback in Avid. Is it possible this even exists at a subframe level?
Currently we’re trying an Animation export to AE for the effects work and then back, but this seems like a workaround, not a solution. Plus, it slows things down.
thanks for the help!
