We are shooting a promo for a hotel spa. The DP and director have spoken to the client at length about getting some slo mo and super slo motion effects in to the programme.

The director would normally shoot 50i on the cinealta, dump the rushes down to dvcam or digi for the offline and then online in DS. The post house would do their stuff on the footage and out comes 25p HD.

Are there any potential gotchas with this workflow bearing in mind that pretty much the whole 3 minute slot is going to be slo mo?

    Thanks in advance

If you want fluid progressive slo mo you should consider shooting on a Varicam.

For super slo mo frame rates above 60 fps you need to consider shooting on film as an option.

    Thanks for the advice Tony.

There are only a couple of UK post houses that offer panasonic decks – and have experience in onlining 60fps footage from the varicam. This project is on a very tight turnaround so I need to be sure that the post goes smoothly.

There is also the issue of frc hire and having to dub HD to HD before dubbing to SD for the offline – because of the slo mo tc.

I don’t want to spark off the vari vs cinealta – I want to offer my client the best value and make sure I have accounted for anything that may be different from an SD workflow in post.
