On-Line Media — Project Association…How do I change the association?
Posted by Jason Brown on September 18, 2005 at 10:37 pmHey Guys,
(sorry for the long subject…seemed like the best explanation!)
I have been researching, and can’t seem to find the answer I want.
Basically, I have one project that has on-line media and I want to use those shots in another project.
But the way my production house works, things get deleted from projects to free up space on a regular basis…and in the media tool you can’t see if media is used in any other projects than the one it is associated with.
So basically, what we have been doing (which seems like the long way) is to export the shots we want from the bin to an ALE, then import that ALE into our new project, which makes a new project association, then redigitize (from tape) the selected clips.
Is there an easier way? I just want to copy the Media Files, and associate a different project to them.

September 19, 2005 at 8:20 amThe Media Tool allows you to see media from other projects. You have to tell it to when you first open it. All Drive, All Projects.
You need only have the drives mounted when you do so. Then do ALL DRIVES, ALL PROJECTS, MASTER CLIPS and you should see them. Drag them into a new bin, then consolidate them (making copies, not moving) and you should be set.

September 19, 2005 at 5:21 pmFile -> Open, navigate to the bin in another project with the material you want, hit Enter. The bin from the other project now is open in your current project and you can use the clips inside as you would any clip in your current project.

I already know that I can open a bin from another folder…and use clips from that bin. My original question, is “how do I change the project association of that clip?”
The consolidation technique worked, but it created new media clips linked to a new master clip…with the original project association. (By project association, what I am reffering to is in the bin view, under headings…under the “Project” field)
Basically, my end result is that we delete media based on whether we are done with a project or not. Problem is, when we are done with a project and delete the media for that project, and a shot or two was used in another project…it is then offline. I want to make a copy of media from one project, and associate it to another project.

September 20, 2005 at 3:59 amJason, this is a case of Avid being too clever, ie always associating with original project. I looked at this issue years ago when I started Avid editing. The only way I understand is to break the connection with the original project, that is consolidate in a different project.
good luck

Why not create a “Do Not Delete” project with the media elements that need to be retained and shared among other projects. Then you don’t need to monkey around with the links. Does this not serve your purpose?

September 21, 2005 at 4:02 amI do a lot of network promo editing, so were constantly using media from other projects (the promo I cut tonight shared media from 5 other projects!) I either consolidate the sequence after I’m finished, or if it’s an ongoing project, consolidate all the the clips that I think I’ll need into the current project (accessing the clips from Unity bins). It’s the simplest and surest way to secure your media.

September 22, 2005 at 7:36 pmyou could also “lock” the clips so that no matter what project its in it wont be deleted.

September 22, 2005 at 9:35 pmThanks for the info guys,
I do create a “common elemets” folder when I think that a shot or GFX might be used multiple times across multiple projects. But this specific video was not digitized that way.
Locking the clips is also an idea, how do I do that?
But, my new question, (I am still learning a lot about AVID and the specific details) is: How specifically do I consolidate media as a copy and reassociate the project. I walked through the consolidation tool, and I only seemed to be able to create new media with new master clips…BUT it still retained the old project association.
Anyone?

As long as you consolidate all of your “outside media” (associated with other projects) into the Unity workspace associated with your current project (or any drive, if you’re not on Unity), it will most definitely be preserved in the project you’re working on.
When you select “Consolidate”, a window will pop up with a list of available workspaces or drives to consolidate the selected media to. Just select the workspace or drive associated with the project that you’re currently working on, perform your consolidation, and relax.
I don’t know how knowledgeable you are about Consolidation, but I’ll take the low-road on this one (nothing personal):
The simplest way to explain Consolidation is this: you’re making copies of your clips. You can highlight individual clips to Consolidate, or you can highlight a Sequence, and it will break the sequence down into individual clips with handles. After Consolidation, the media for these clips will exist in 2 places: the workspace/drive that they originated from, and the workspace/drive that you just Consolidated them to. If the media from the old project is deleted, you’re safe, because your Consolidated clips (or sequence – but only the shots that appear within the sequence) now exist as exact copies in your current project, and linked to the project, no matter what the original “Project Association” is. Consolidated clips have no association to their parent project. They’re considered ‘new’ in the current project.
It’s magical, man, as if you had just digitized them straight from tape!
