Would someone please explain if Express Pro HD is able to process (ingest, edit and export)HDV material. And how this is accomplished using their (to me confusing)DNxHD system.

I’m still not clear if Avid is able to deal with HDV?

    Thanks
    Harvey

Not yet. Feature will be released later this year for free to current Xpress Pro HD owners.

So how will HDV be handled…natively or with an intermediate codec similar to Cineform Aspect codec?

This from an Avid press release.

“editors using Avid Xpress Pro HD will be able to simply capture, edit, and output native HDV back to tape.”

This will be a sluggish non realtime solution…no?

You will be allowed to render with DNxHD codec. This should increase performance.

do you know whether the HDV upgrade will enable a decent offline workflow? will it be possible to do frame-accurate batch capture?

I don’t know for sure. Specifics have been limited. Batch capture sure be standard. I know some manufacturers are having issues with HDV and batch capture in general, but I think it is imperative for Avid to solve this.

It is my understanding that Express Pro HD allows capturing DVCPRO HD over firewire as DNX HD. It would seem DNX HD at 220Mbit/sec 10 bit would be the best way to deal with DVCPRO HD, when using multiple graphics layers. Correct? Or is it better to work with native DVCPRO HD? I am a non AVID user looking to switch.

DVC Pro HD captured via firewire remains as DVC Pro HD. The process is exactly like DV.
You can render FX and import material using the DNxHD codec instead of DVC Pro HD.

So when capturing DVCProHD over firewire in AXP, the only res selectable in the capture tool will DVCProHD? no access to the standard resolutions of 15:1s, DV411, DV420, 1:1 or the DNxHD codecs? will this be the same story when the HDV update for AXP 5 arrives?

My understanding is that you will either 1) work with HDV in its native format and all effects will be handled via DNxHD, OR, 2) the HDV will be captured as DNxHD, where you will be able to work with it in RT, then output it back again as native HDV, again with all your effects remaining as DNxHD to allow for RT output over firewire without Mojo.

This is from my reseller. Since no definite specifics have been given (including release date, which I’ve heard will be anywhere from June to October), this is simply speculation. However it’s done, Avid has said straight-up that it will be an elegant solution and the best in the industry. We’ll see.
