    Howdy,

I’ve posted something similar on this before, but now have a more vague, generalized question that may help me solve a baffling conumdrum.

OK, so I’m working with an AVID Xpress DV 3.5.4 on Windows XP, producing spots for a local TV station, and the logos look like crap! The question is then, from start to finish, what’s the best way to import, animate and render logos in AVID Xpress DV so that they have clean edges and look the best???

Thanks in advance for any and all help. I’m pulling my hair out over here!!!

You are seeing the effects of DV compression.
So you need to change your equipment and move to DV50 [XPro] or 1:1 [XPro w/ Mojo].

Hmm, well I would love to upgrade…shoot, it’d be my dream. However, I’m trapped right now in a company with a scrimp-tight budget that’s not budging for any kind of upgrade right now.

That being said, is there anyway to improve the look of the logos with what I’m working with now???

    Please help.

Are you importing and rendering the logos 1:1? The way I understand it, you can work with video DV25 and render and import graphics 1:1.

That would be nice, but alas, the Mojo acts as a dongle of sorts. No 1:1 without it.

Yeah, I’ll be honest…We’re not even on the 1:1 compression playing field. Not to mention DV25, which we don’t even use. Unfortunately, I’m forced into a situation where I have to make the crappy equipment that I have now, look as broadcast quality as I possibly can…

Anyhow, thanks for all the replies. If there are any other suggestions, I’m certainly open to them all.

Instead of doing your moves with the Avid keyframer, try using Boris – should render quite nicely.

Christopher… I suggested Boris to you in your original post. Did you not even try it at least? It IS possible to get clean results using that app.

You know what…I have been trying it. With mixed results. The logos look a little better, but there are still some issues. Thanks for the suggestion though. I’m pushing now for an AVID upgrade.

in Boris, go to edit/preferences & the “local project” tab. always make sure “better quality field rendering” (no aliasing) is selected… also if you have flicker probs, select 1:2:1 deflickering as well. I’m not sure about other versions of Boris products but in mine (RedGL 3.0.1), even though it says in that tab “values set here will be the default for all new settings”, the only one that “sticks” is the better quality field rendering setting… so I always make sure 1:2:1 deflickering, etc. is set before I export, OR apply if using as a AVX plugin in Avid.

    hth,
    Bill

I forgot to ask… what mixed results are you getting from Boris?
