Export As Source Interlacing ?
I am working with the last release of Avid Xpress Pro at a small public access TV station, and I have been editing SD footage captured through the Avid Mojo’s composite video inputs as DV25 411. Now when I export my final project As Source with the Avid codec my titles look great but anytime I animate them or there is fast movement in the video I am getting interlacing. Now if I export as a Quicktime video with the Animation preset with the highest quality, and setting the export to a single field rather then even or odd fields it solves the interlacing problem, but there is a loss in quality and my titles start to have jagged edges because of the compression. I am at a loss on what to do to solve the interlacing problem and still maintain the quality. Any help would be much appreciated.

What you’re seeing is the interlacing. It’s solved when you export single field because there is no more interlacing, but it looks like crap because you’re throwing away half your resolution.
What’s the final delivery for this file? Web? If so, you’ll need to deinterlace the file (I use Sorenson Squeeze, which does a decent enough job). You could also mixdown your final sequence and apply the Fluidmotion effect, set the input to Interlaced and Output to Progressive. I haven’t tried this, but in theory it should work.
If it’s to go to a playback server to go to air, the interlacing will need to be there so when it’s played back on air it will look nice and crisp. On computer monitors the interlacing looks nasty, but played back for air it’s great.

Thanks, that makes sense now. Most of what I do here does go on air, but this particular project is going to be a promo DVD that will be played back on computers and flatscreen TV’s, so I have still been experiencing a strange shimmering motion blur that to me looks like the same interlacing issue. Could that be because of the compression that takes place when using the old Ulead DVD Workshop 2 program that we use here, or do I also need to de-interlace the video before bringing it into DVD Workshop? Could this be all solved by a more sophisticated 3rd party Encoder that would encode nice mpegs before bringing into DVD Workshop? Right now all we have is AVID and After Effects. Should I start with seeing if they will invest in Sorenson Squeeze or is there a better alternative for a reasonable price? I know we will working on encoding for the Internet soon also, so if Sorenson is the way to go I could use that as a selling point.

What version of AE do you have? It’s got a pretty good encoding engine…

We have AE CS3. Do you think it would just be better to import videos from AVID then encode them from there, rather then spending money on Sorenson Squeeze? -
If you’ve got the money, go with Sorenson – especially if AE is on a seperate machine. If you have CS3 on the same machine as Avid, you can export a QT reference and use CS3. Then use the money you would have spent on Sorenson, and get an upgrade to MC. Then you get Sorenson and a few other software toys to play with. Although, come to think of it, you should have gotten Sorenson with XPress, unless its and academic package. The academic version of Avid only comes with the editing software…
