Posted by Mark Dalzell on January 6, 2009 at 10:57 pm

Just finished installing Avid Media Composer 3.0. When I try and open
it I get the following message: “Initializing ACPL Effects”.

Stays on that page then closes.

    Any ideas would be helpful.

    Thanks

Windows XP 64-bit is not an approved OS. You need Vista Business 64 bit or 32 bit, or XP 32 bit. XP 64 is a no go.

Your 9600GT graphics card may also be to blame. Avid prefers Quadro cards, but there are people using the 8800 with success. I believe they soft-mod the card using RivaTuner or something to make it appear as a Quadro.

Definitely change your OS, though. I’ve never heard of people successfully running Avid on XP64.

    Michael,

Thanks for taking time to reply and help out. I will get a third
removable drive and instal Windows Vista x64 on it as suggested.

I will also swap out my current card for an FX Quadro 1700.

Should be good to go then don’t you think?

    Best.

    Mark

Unless you have a fx1700, start with just the OS. Your graphics card may work fine so there’s no reason to spend money on a new card.

However, if you have a 1700 available, switch it out too. Otherwise your system looks nice. The biggest issue with Avid’s are the CPU (Intel only), graphics card (nVidia – Quadro preferred), and OS (XP32, Vista Business 32/64).

    Michael.
