  • Imported AIFF files and CD tracks are always overmodulated…

Posted by Bill Paterno on March 5, 2007 at 6:31 pm

An editor that I am working with is having problems with importing AIFFs from Protools and tracks from CDs. Every time he imports the files, they are overmodulated. He is using MC Adrenaline on a Mac Platform (G5). The AIFFs that the audio engineer provides him from Protools are 48K 16 bit. Any help would be greatly appreciated as I am getting nowhere with the editor.

    Thanks,
    Bill

    Good day Bill,

The CDs are at what I call “CD level” meaning that they are mixed for listening to and they are extremely hot to bring into AVID. Most times once I bring in the CD tracks I’ll take them down at least -10db or more depending on what I am using the music for. As far as the Pro Tools, is the audio engineer mixing to CD level? If he is then this is what is causing the problem as well.

I would do a couple of tests with the audio engineer and see what he needs to do make it work for the editor.

    Thanks,

Our Audio Engineer is mixing at CD level (peak at 0). The thing that I find strange is why would that come in hot to Avid? Especially considering Avid and Protools are both from the same company! What would a suggestion be for our Audio Engineer to have the levels mixed to so that the Avid could just import them in without a problem? Or is this just a trial and error thing?

    Thanks,
    Bill
