    guys.. help
Im trying to find out some info before Monday

I have a client who wants to start swaping drives with omf files, basically digitized media for me to cut.
They have a real system, I just downloaded FREE avid.

yes, I am an avid editor, I just want to cut these projects on the road…. with out paying a bundle for dvexpress.

Can I open the media they capture (on a real system) in Free? (import the clips they didge) and then after I cut, can they open my project on a real system? Or, can I in FREE export the timeline? I know that there is no consolodation in free… it there a loop whole?

and… If I do get express, does that version have consolodate? And would composer even read that?

    OH MAN!!

Avid Free doesn’t play with any other system of Avid at all. It’s designed to introduce the Avid interface to new users, and that’s about it.

Your best bet is to try and find XpressDV (it’s no long being made, so it should be really cheap if you can find it). Your client can capture in whatever resolution they want on their Media Composer (say, the highest resolution they can), then transcode to an external drive at DV25. You take that drive and edit with it on XPress DV. Cut your project, finish it, give your client just the project file (forget about the media and consolidating), they open it on their media composer (with the original, higher rez footage)–everything will relink and you’re done! They can online it there and consolidate when they’re done. Pretty simple, really.

    Good luck.

    Michael.

[MHancock (promoboy)] “Your client can capture in whatever resolution they want on their Media Composer (say, the highest resolution they can), then transcode to an external drive at DV25. You take that drive and edit with it on XPress DV.”

What’s the proper method for getting this media into Xpress DV or (in my case) Xpress Pro, then? Just a straightforward import? Or drag it into a bin?

Question, when you import Avid OMF or QuickTime DV25 movies into a new (unrelated) project, does it recompress it? Or simply “repackage” it with its naming scheme?

Can anyone direct me to a copy of Avid Free DV for Mac?

I’m trying to brush up on Avid (I’ve been off it for years using FCP) and can’t afford to buy a copy for practice. I just want to refresh my memory and play around with the interface between jobs. No heavy lifting.

I know there is a free 30 day trial of Media Composer out right now. Unfortunately, my computer does not meet the minimum system requirements–it is not running OS 10.6.3. I do, however, have an older machine, running OS 10.3.9, that could handle Avid Free DV.

Can anyone direct me to an archive of the Avid Free DV software for Mac?

For the record, I have located a copy of Avid Free DV version 1.6.1 for Windows at:

    https://en.kioskea.net/download/download-1992-avid-free-dv

Here is a list of the Avid Free DV system requirements:

    https://web.archive.org/web/20070221065207/https://www.avid.com/freedv/sysReq...

Any help you can offer is greatly appreciated. Thanks!
