I’m a absolute newbie to the Avid platform, having edited for four years on Final Cut. Just scored a great project, but I need to do it on Avid, which I’m looking forward to learning.

    G5 Quad, 2.5GB Ram
    Avid Xpress 4.6
    10.4.3

The project was shot on HD on a Varicam and it’s already captured on a drive.

So do I need a Mojo? My system is set up for Final Cut with Firewire out to a TV via composite.

Thanks for any input / advice.

First off, welcome to the dark side 😉

Do you know how the project was brought into the Avid? Was the project brought in as DV resolution (meaning it was downconverted, and you are offlining the project)? If it was you should have no problems. If you are working on HD footage, I’m not sure 4.6 will support your project. HDV was not supported until 5.0 (on the PC side – I’m not sure when it came into the Mac side) You might want to poke around the Avid site and search for a document called ‘supported resolutions’….

Mojo adds 1)component input and output (via Avid approved cables you need to buy from Avid), and 2) processing speed (plus the ability to upgrade firmware via software updates…)

If your project is DV resolution, and does not have a lot of layers and/or FX, you could probably get along without Mojo. If you do have multiple layers, lots of eye candy, you could still get along without Mojo if your willing to put up with render time.

    HTH,
    Jon

Thanks Jon. They told me its an HD project, but that it has been assembled on a Mac Xpress version. Must have been downconverted, I guess…

In my opinion, the Mojo allows you to output in FULL QUALITY resolution. if you would notice on the lower left area of your timeline, a button that controls resolution would be present. a full green colored symbol indicates FULL QUALITY, a divided GREEN and YELLOW symbol for BEST and a yellow symbol for PERFORMANCE. Therefore, I believe you still need the mojo for better output capabilities.

An After Effects plug-in may even allow you to use the Mojo to output to a TV while compositing.
