Animating for an iphone app.
Posted by Sara Jean on February 10, 2010 at 5:20 pmHi,
I’m wondering if anyone has any experience creating animations for iphone apps. I’ve just been asked to do a quick intro animation for an app and I’m just wondering:
A. Is this something you can create in AE?
B. If so, what type of codec would you export?
C. What comp size does it support?I’ve tried to search online but most of the info is on how to create the app itself.
Thanks!!

February 10, 2010 at 5:53 pmi’ve never created any kind of animation for an app or splash screen, but ae will create animations, so the answer to A is most likely.
as far as B and C, i think i’d ask the developer, or let you’re boss/contact person know that you need specs for delivery. i would think the developer would know the screen/comp size to use, and i would assume they’d have a good idea on what format (.mpg .mov, .gif, etc.) and codec (h.264, mpeg-2, etc.) they’d like. i would plan on rendering out of ae as quicktime lossless animation, then convert with a compression app.
i would also ask them about frame rate.

That’s a big help. Kevin, Do you know a good compression app? Also, I tried using the Device Central but I’m still on CS3 and AE is not an option. Do you know another program that might do the same thing?

February 10, 2010 at 6:29 pmi use mpeg streamclip often for a lot of my compression needs. it’s free and multi-platform and it does have an option under files>export to other formats, for iphone…
i’ve never used that setting so i can’t tell you if that is what you are looking for or not, but streamclip will also create many formats/containers with lots of different codecs.

I recently encoded a couple of training videos originating in 1920 x 1080 for use on the iTouch. I ended up using Adobe Media Encoder CS4 and got very good results. Bear in mind, however, that even after you’ve encoded your clip for the iPhone, you have to do an import to the device via iTunes. At least that’s what we ran into with our natively encoded clips. It would seem to import it, then say that it was in a native codec and couldn’t take it (go figure). We got the best results finally with a 640 x 480 H.264 file (the video was 3 minutes long). The iTouch imported it seamlessly.

July 3, 2010 at 6:25 pmThe best way we’ve found is image sequences. output a .png sequence, and it’s super easy to play those as animations at will.
makes it very straightforward and simple way to deal with animations… too many things go goofy with video formats. 🙂
it’s also easier to deal with pauses, and having what you pause on be nice looking. you can go back and forth in the animation, and it’s just a matter of telling the thing which frame to show.
