I bought the bluray of Dirty Rotten Scoundrels the other day, and while I was watching, I noticed this weird robotic sounding “buzz” on a lot of the dialog. I’ve heard this effect fairly often on radio commercials as well. Could someone please explain *why* audio engineers are doing this? Is it on purpose? I think it sounds terrible, but maybe there’s some good reason I’m unaware of. Also, I’d like to know what exactly is being done to get this “buzzy” sound. Is it a filter, compression, noise reduction, an unwanted error in the chain somewhere?
    Thanks!

Are you talking about simple overload clipping? Is it only on loud syllables?
Else, I don’t know what you are referring to?

Recording audio without metering and monitoring is exactly like framing and focusing without looking at the viewfinder.

I only heard the sample on small speakers just now, but I get the impression someone was over zealous at cleaning up the dialogue track with a denoiser, prepping it for the blueray release.

I would not have gone that far myself.
