after an opinion on this clip – broken mic?
hi all, I have a senheiser me66 and an audio technica AT897.
Both of these are un touched, filmed from 50cm from mic with it pointing at speakers face. First is the sennheiser 2nd is AT.
Is the AT broken?

Hello David,
They are of different sensitivities, and you’re making quite a bit of noise int he background, but what makes you think the AT is broken?

It just seems so much quieter, why would this reduced sensitivity ever be a benefit?I’d like to use the AT as a wireless table mic for speeches

We get posts here about a half dozen times a year from people who are trying to shoot in music clubs who find that even at the lowest settings, their audio is still distorted.
I was on a shoot a year or so ago in which the shooter wanted to stand in the turret of an Armored Personnel Carrier while it was being driven around a test track. The On-Camera mic on the Sony camera was just too sensitive for that amount of noise.
Countryman B6 Lavs can be purchased in 2 sensitivities. The lower sensitivity versions are used for highly dramatic performances and singing performances where voices are expected to be louder. If you use a mic that’s too sensitive for the job, two things will get you. You may overdrive the mic itself or the mic may overdrive the preamp.
