  Help with a frozen wireless?!

  Hey, we’ve been shooting up in Alaska (temps down to -20) and are having a tough time with our Lectrosonic UM200’s freezing, as well as the 9V’s freezing. Tried putting heat packs around them, putting them in wool socks. some things work better than others, but all in all, it’s not a long term solution. Any ideas out there? Are there any mics that are built for sub-freezing temps? We still have a month of shooting in AK!

  Hi Michal-

  According to Lectrosonics FAQ’s, alkaline batteries will only last a few minutes at -20F. They recommend NiMh or LiPoly batteries by iPower brand. They said the Li Poly’s perform very well at low temps. HOWEVER, BATTERIES CANNOT BE RECHARGED WHEN THEY ARE COLD. So, you would have to have them at room temperature to charge them.

  Is it possible for you to mount the transmitters on the person’s body using an ace bandage? I’m thinking their body heat would help keep the transmitters/batteries at appropriate temps.

  I live and work in Florida so I’m certainly not the cold weather expert.
